Below you
will find information on the four main categories of herbs we
carry along with listings of which herbs fit which categories,
you will notice many herbs fall into several. Following this are
alphabetically listed herb descriptions further detailing their
science, properties and lore.
APHRODISIACS
Through the
ages herbal aphrodisiacs have been the most sought after and
highly esteemed of plant medicines. These gifts of Aphrodite,
the Goddess of Love, inspire erotic arousal and desire, dissolve
inhibitions, and may even reverse impotence and frigidity.
Aphrodisiacs enhance sexual ability and agility, heightening the
body and mind’s sensitivity to pleasure and joy. Many tonify
the reproductive organs, greatly improving fertility. Some of
Aphrodite’s herbs can be highly personal; what works
wonders for one person or couple may not produce the same
effects for another. Dedicated to healing through pleasure, we
have carefully researched and explored many aphrodisiacs over
the years, we include the juiciest of what we have found here in
the catalog, including those with ancient histories as well as
current scientific studies demonstrating their efficacy. The primary aphrodisiac herbs we supply are: Cacao
Seed, Catuaba, Clavohuasca, Chuchuhuasi, Cordyceps, Damiana, Iporuru, Kola Nut, Maca Root, Moctezuma’s Secret drink blend,
Muira-Puama, Red Ginseng, Rhodiola Root, Suma Root, and Yohimbe. Secondary
aphrodisiacs and sexual tonics include: American Ginseng,
Ashwaghanda, Astragalus, Betel Nut, Coconut Oil, Guarana, Guayusa, He-Shou-Wu, Longan Berries, Lycii
Berries, Poria Mushrooms, Reishi Antlers, Schizandra Berries,
Shiitake Mushrooms.
IMMUNOSTIMULANTS
The most
important group of herbs for all of us, young and old, living
at this time in history when pollution, cancer and other diseases
have reached epidemic proportions. These are herbs that
strengthen and nourish the body’s natural immunity to
disease and toxins. Many of these herbs are adaptogens; they
increase the body’s resistance to a wide variety of stresses
and have a balancing and restorative effect on the body as a
whole. See the Book
Adaptogens. The majority of immunostimulants contain phytonutrients
that are powerful antioxidants or directly stimulate the bodies
endogenous production of antioxidants. Antioxidants enhance
health and longevity by neutralizing free radicals - unstable
oxygen molecules that damage cells, causing many
degenerative diseases and the aging process itself. The
immunostimulant herbs we offer are: American Ginseng, Ashwaghanda,
Astragalus, Balsam of Peru, Bilberry, Cacao Seed Raw, Caigua, Camu Camu Berries,
Canchalagua, Catuaba, Chanca
Piedra, Chia Seed, Chlorella, Chuchuhuasi, Clavohuasca, Coconut Oil,
Codonopsis, Copaiba, Cordyceps, Dan Shen, Elderberiies, Eleuthero Root, Ginkgo Leaves, Green Tea,
Guayusa, Hercampuri, He-Shou-Wu, Honeybush
Tea, Iporuru, Jujube Dates, Licorice Root, Longan Berries, Lycii Berries, Maca Root,
Manayupa, Medicinal
Mushrooms, Milk
Thistle Seed, Neem, Nettle Leaf, Pau D’arco,
Pro-EM1, Purple Corn, Red Ginseng, Rhodiola Root,
Rooibos Tea, Sangre De Drago, Sacha Jergon, Schizandra Berries,
Seabuckthorn Berry, Spirulina,
Suma Root, Tahuari, Tibetan Rhodiola, Una De Gato, White Ginseng, White
Tea, and Yacon, Yerba Mate.
SEDATIVES
& HYPNOTICS
The herbal
sedatives and hypnotics we offer relax and nourish the nervous
system, help to relieve pain, reduce tension and anxiety, and
promote restful sleep without interfering with the natural sleep
cycles. They produce a calm and quiet state of mind, often
accompanied by mild euphoria. The primary sedatives &
hypnotics we supply are: Blue Water Lily Flowers, California
Poppy, Corydalis, Dan Shen, Kava, Sacred Lotus Flowers, Mayan Water Lily
Flowers, Mulungu, Valerian, and White Water Lily Flowers. Secondary herbs with
sedative action are: Ashwaghanda, Jujube Date, Longan
Berries, Manayupa, Poria Mushrooms, Purple Corn, Reishi Mushrooms, and Rooibos Tea.
STIMULANTS
Herbs to increase physical
and mental energy & endurance, to arouse the senses and
heighten awareness. Common stimulants such as coffee or black
tea are unbalancing to the central nervous system, over
activating the adrenal glands and depleting the bodies natural
energy reserves. Though some of the stimulants we supply contain
caffeine or related alkaloids, these often occur along with
other compounds that are more nourishing and balancing to the
body. Still, we urge that all stimulants containing caffeine
alkaloids (xanthines) be used with respect and care. For further
information on the xanthine rich herbs and other stimulants we
recommend Dale Pendell’s exciting book PharmakoDynamis.
The xanthine containing stimulants that we carry are: Cacao
Seed, Green Tea, Guarana, Guayusa, Kola Nut, White Tea, and Yerba Mate. The
xanthine free herbs with stimulating properties we offer are: American
Ginseng, Betel Nut, Calamus
Root, Catuaba, Chlorella, Chuchuhuasi, Cordyceps, Eleuthero Root, Ginkgo Leaves,
Muira-Puama, Red Ginseng, Rhodiola Root, Rooibos Tea, Spirulina,
Sceletium, Suma Root, Tibetan Rhodiola, Turkey Tail Mushroom, White Ginseng, and Yohimbe.

highest potency, finest quality herbs at reasonable prices.
The majority of our botanicals are either
ecologically wildcrafted, organically grown or cultivated without
chemicals. All our herbs are GMO free,
never irradiated, treated with sulfur or other preservatives. For economy we package
most of our herbs in biodegradable true cellophane bags, for long
term storage we recommend air tight glass jars placed in a dark cupboard or refrigerator.
A WHOLESALE
pricelist is
available upon request.
Though we mention the
active chemical constituents throughout our catalog, we recognize that it
is the totality of the herb and the interaction with an
individual's biochemistry that is responsible for a therapeutic effect.
Admittedly, science has a way to go before it understands this intricacy.
For this reason we offer predominantly whole herbs, and a few whole herb extracts that we feel are of exceptional quality
and benefit.
We have access
to many more herbs than we can list, if you’re looking for
something you don’t see, just ask. We
occasionally get small batches of interesting herbs and
periodically make them available in limited quantities. Click on

pharmacology similar to Ginseng in Chinese medicine, yet it is far less
expensive. It is the best rejuvenative herb…in all conditions of
weakness and tissue deficiency in children, the elderly, those debilitated
by chronic diseases, those suffering from overwork, lack of sleep or
nervous exhaustion…inhibits aging and catalyzes the anabolic processes…one
of the best herbs for the mind upon which it is nurturing and clarifying.
It is calming and promotes deep, dreamless sleep." Tanganykans use

BALSAM OF PERU
RESIN Myroxylum balsamum v. pereirae
A dark, pourable tree resin from El Salvador. The common name comes form
the 17th century when the resin was sent to Peru for export to Europe.
Trees must be 20 years old before they can be tapped for the resin. It
has a rich, earthy, vanilla-like fragrance, and makes a enthralling body
scent. Traditionally used for skin disease, wound healing, fungal
infections, coughs and lung ailments, colds, and rheumatism. It has
clearly documented antibacterial, antiseptic and antiparasitical
actions. For internal use, 5 drops twice a day is recommended. We offer
pure tree resin, not a steamed distilled oil.
$10/ 1/2 oz bottle or
$16/1 oz bottle (double liquid volume for shipping)
BETEL
NUTS Areca catechu
This is the
world’s most popular (per capita) stimulant derived from the
graceful Betel nut palm tree. Traditionally blended with a variety
of spices and additives, wrapped in a betel leaf (Piper betle
) and slowly chewed to activate the stimulant alkaloid mix. The
alkaloid arecoline has been clinically shown to improve serial
learning and memory. Very popular in India, Indonesia, Thailand and
other far eastern cultures. Chewed by millions daily, before
breakfast, after lunch, at bedtime and every hour between. Virtually
unknown in the west, but used by more humans than coffee or tobacco!
The base of Betel nuts, Betel leaf, Acacia resin and lime is
elaborated in hundreds of ways using cardamom, cloves, tamarind,
dates, fennel, honey, turmeric, other flavors and psychoactive
herbs, each region having its own unique blends. Betel is valued
throughout Asia as a highly effective antiparasite herb. Soaked in
vodka, the nuts make a potent dark red tincture. In Asia life-long
chewing of Betel nuts is linked with mouth cancer, though it’s not
clear if this is due to the nuts themselves or the popular habit of
chewing them with tobacco. Interestingly, the Betel leaf has been
shown to suppress tumor growth. We offer thinly sliced nuts.
Sliced Asian Betel nuts $13/8 oz or $20/lb
BILBERRY Vaccinium myrtillus
Small dark purple berries from a European shrub similar to the
blueberry. Utilized since at least the middle ages as a food and
medicine to improve vision. These mildly sweet, slightly
astringent berries are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants—especially
bioflavonoids. The most important of the flavonoids appears to be
the anthocyanosides, which extensive scientific research shows to
enhance circulation by increasing blood flow, strengthening
existing capillaries and stimulating new capillary formation. This
action seems to be most concentrated in and around the eyes,
making Bilberry the favored herb for all forms of macular
degeneration. During World War II British Royal Air Force pilots
ate Bilberry jam to improve visual acuity and clinical studies
confirm that regular consumption improves night vision. Computer
users report that it significantly helps to prevent and relieve
eye fatigue. Bilberry’s effects on circulation also help to
protect against artherosclerosis. Research has shown that Bilberry
tonifies the urinary system and kidneys, balances blood sugar, is
antiviral and antibacterial, antiulcer and antiinflammatory.
Mixing with Ginkgo leaf has a synergistic beneficial effect on
circulation. Bilberry can be made into delicious jams and wines. A
traditional Elizabethan remedy for stomach complaints was made
with ground berries and honey. Adds a nice flavor and beautiful
purple color when added to teas. We enjoy rehydrating the berries
by soaking them in water overnight, then adding them to smoothies
or cereal. 10–20 grams three times a day is recommended.
Organically grown, whole, Bulgarian Bilberry $20/8
oz or
$35/lb
CACAO SEED
POWDER Theobroma cacao "Cocoa"

Native to Central American rainforests, this tree was originally cultivated
by the Olmecs, then the Maya, Toltecs and finally taken up by the
Aztecs. The seeds were actually used as a form of currency in Aztec
society. The Aztecs were very thorough in their quest to understand
the properties of all plants in their realm, having an entire class of
trained medicinal scientists exploring far and wide to bring back
living specimens to the royal botanical gardens for research. With
such expertise and so many intriguing botanical products available, it
is fitting that they determined the seeds of the Cacao tree to be of
such superior value. There were periods when no person in the whole
domain was allowed to use the seeds, except the King and his inner
circle. In fact, the botanical name for this tree, Theobroma cacao,
translates as "food of the gods."
To prepare the seeds, the pods are first piled up to "sweat" or
ferment for 3-4 days, then the seeds are removed and dried. For home
use locally, they are simply roasted and ground into a paste which is
frequently brewed with hot peppers, aromatic medicinal herbs, cornmeal
and mucilaginous flowers of the psychoactive Flor Rosita tree.
When it became necessary to store the powdered product for shipping
and commerce, a process for defatting the rich cocoa butter was
devised to prevent the oils from going rancid with time. It is these
defatted roasted seeds which are ground to make this exquisite plant
ally we know as "cocoa." Few non-native people are acquainted
with the pure form of "cocoa" and its effects because of the abundance
of manufactured chocolate/sugar products today.
To learn the spirit of this sacred food-drug one should experience it
free from the dramatically altering effects of sugar and other
additives. Brew a strong infusion of this seed powder by taking two
tablespoons and working it into one cup of cold water. Start this
heating slowly and gently, gradually bringing it to the verge of
boiling. Take the heat back down immediately to a simmer without
actually boiling. Let simmer for three minutes. Drink hot, but keep it
well stirred so as not to have the suspended material settle.
Cacao's euphoric
aphrodisiacal qualities are attributed to theobromine with a small ratio of
caffeine, phenethylamine, isoquinoline, and anandamide which has been found to bind
to the same receptors in the brain as THC. Cacao also
contains significant amounts of two compounds that inhibit the
degradation of anandamide in the body. The effects come on rapidly.
Contrary to assumptions, the action of theobromine is truly relaxant,
particularly for smooth muscle groups. The experience has elements of
cerebral excitement but the sensation is overwhelmingly somatic. The
heartbeat becomes pronounced, breathing is deepened and nourishing
blood circulation is increased throughout the body. Tactile sensation
is raised to a level of bodily ecstasy. A calm, warm glow of being
incarnate, a gentle power courses through the limbs, that perfect
feeling of fulfillment and pleasure, like curling up on a soft rug
with a friend in front of a winter fireplace.
Pure Cacao seed powder has recently been found to contain high levels
of antioxidant polyphenols, oligomeric procynanidins and other
flavonoids that help boost the immune system and offer significant
protection against "bad" cholesterol and heart disease. It
is also very nutritious, having a high protein, vitamin and mineral
content.
Our organically grown, fair trade certified Cacao comes from a small
independently owned farms. Expertly roasted,
it is the finest quality in terms of taste, nutrition and medicinal
components that we have come across. It is what we use in
formulating our popular aphrodisiacal drink blend, Moctezuma's Secret, as well as for personal use in making
chocolate confections at home. It is shade grown, depending on an intact
surrounding forest that also acts as a refuge for the region’s
biodiversity. Your purchase directly helps support a traditionally
sustainable agriculture that aids in the protection and regrowth of
our rapidly disappearing rainforests.

Certified, roasted Cacao Seed powder $10/8 oz or $16/lb

CACAO
SEEDS, RAW Theobroma cacao "Chocolate Beans"
Many of us have an
intimate relationship with chocolate, but few are familiar with
the raw, unprocessed seed, the original "Food of the
Gods." Once utilized as a form of currency in Aztec society,
raw Cacao seeds are a true superfood, being high in protein,
beneficial fats, vitamins and minerals. Raw Cacao is reported to
be the richest natural source for magnesium, an important
mineral highly deficient in modern diets. The raw seeds are also
surprisingly high in vitamin C and an excellent source of natural sulfur, a mineral associated with healthy
skin, nails, hair and proper liver and pancreas function. Raw
Cacao is the most medicinal of any chocolate product, containing
the highest levels of immune-enhancing antioxidant polyphenols,
procyanidins and other flavonoids known to protect against a
wide array of ailments, especially heart disease. Unfortunately
cooking and processing seriously compromises or destroys many of
these health enhancing constituents in the seeds. The
psychoactive properties of the raw seeds are also very
different, having a more mild "clear" stimulant effect, being
pleasantly relaxing, imparting a sense of well being, along with
a wonderful enhancement of tactile sensation that leaves no
doubt to their aphrodisiacal efficaciousness. These actions are thought
to be at least partially attributable to a much lower caffeine
content and higher theobromine content than the fermented,
roasted, processed and sugared "cocoa" that we are all
use to. The taste of raw Cacao seeds is similar to that of
unsweetened baking chocolate, slightly bitter and deliciously
rich. They can be eaten whole as is. Soaking in water for
several hours softens them nicely, at which point they can be
made into raw "hot" chocolate by adding a handful to a
blender along with your favorite milk (we prefer hemp seed or
macadamia nut milk), a little vanilla, cinnamon and honey to
sweeten and then warming on the stove. This can alternately be
frozen for a special treat. The dry seeds can be ground in a
coffee mill to make raw "cocoa powder." This can be mixed
with 1/5 -1/3 raw Virgin Oil de Coco-Creme oil and honey to taste, then shaped into squares, placed on
waxpaper in the fridge for 10 minutes to solidify, and you have truly
phenomenal raw chocolate bars!
For those who prefer
a more familiar taste, the seeds can be roasted in a pan, then
eaten straight or ground and mixed with honey. These seeds are
organically grown and dried at very low temperatures in Ecuador. For your convenience we
now offer dehusked Cacao nibs (pieces). These nibs are very
close to what we previously offered as Super Raw Cacao. We enjoy them as a
healthful daily snack. See our Books
page for the book Naked Chocolate, full of lore and exquisite recipes.
Organically grown raw Cacao seed nibs $6/4 oz or $19/lb or $70/4 lbs
CACAO
SEED POWDER, RAW Theobroma cacao "Raw Cocoa"
Cacao
seeds are processed at low temperatures producing this fantastic raw
cocoa (and the cocoa butter). Raw Cacao powder is clearly the most
medicinal chocolate product available. Analysis reveals up to 4 times the antioxidants
action of roasted seed powder! If you are looking to maximize the health
benefits of Cacao, this is the form to work with. In fact this raw Cacao
powder has some of the highest antioxidant levels found in any
nutriceutical or food. Excellent rich taste and delectable stimulant
effects similar to the raw nibs. Use in the place of roasted cocoa
powder in any recipes or concoctions. It takes nearly 3 lbs of seeds to
make one pound of powder. 1/2-2 tablespoons a day is the recommended
dose.

CACAO BUTTER,
RAW Theobroma cacao "Raw Cocoa Butter"
Cacao
seeds are pressed at low temperature to make this impressive raw cocoa butter.
Completely unlike other cocoa butters, which are processed at high
temperatures and treated with chemicals to to remove the subsequent
unpleasant scent, this butter has a wonderful delicate chocolate aroma
and smooth rich flavor. Raw Cacao butter contains beneficial polyphenols
and saturated fats that may have a positive effect on cholesterol.
Considered by many to be the ultimate skin moisturizer. Soothing and
helpful for a variety of skin conditions. Cacao butter is a solid that
softens and melts at body temperature. It can be used in a wide spectrum
of lotions and ointments and is superb for making all sorts of creamy
chocolate confections. It takes nearly 3 lbs of Cacao seeds to
make one pound of butter.

CAIGUA
Cyclanthera pedata
This Peruvian wild cucumber
has long been utilized for weight loss and problems associated
with arteriosclerosis. It is thought to be one of the most
potent natural fat absorbers and is traditionally taken together
with Hercampuri to rejuvenate and reduce cellulite. Clinical
studies have demonstrated regular consumption of Caigua
regulates the metabolism of lipids and sugar in the blood
stream, controlling cholesterol levels by reducing LDL
cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) while increasing
HDL cholesterol (the "good" type). Flavonoids and
triterpenoid saponins have been isolated from the Caigua fruit.
A preclinical study has also shown Caigua to be a more potent
antiinflammatory than ibuprofin. Caigua’s weight reducing and
cholesterol-balancing effects are most noted when consumed daily
for several weeks or months. 2–4 teaspoons is the recommended
dosage. Pleasant tasting, it mixes well with foods or can be
dissolved in liquids or taken in capsules. Our Caigua is the
finest available, organically grown and spray dried into a potent powder.

CALEA
ZACATECHICHI: the Dream Herb
The Chontal people of Oaxaca know the endemic Calea zacatechichi
herb to be useful as a divinatory medicine. They claim that an extremely
bitter tea made from the plant induces a state of sleep during which
very brief, intense dream sequences reveal the answers village problems
and personal difficulties. Strangely, an extract of Calea
zacatechichi was studied in a fully controlled clinical setting by
authoritative scientists to determine its pharmacological effects. The
result of this objective research revealed that the plant indeed
produces a state of drowsiness, followed by peculiarly intense but short
episodes of cat naps in which a set of dream sequences were invariably
reported by the subjects, who stated them to be unusually lucid and
profound of meaning. In this careful clinical study, control groups
receiving placebos, had no such experiences. We sought this obscure herb
for years, finally encountering it in the mountains of southern Mexico,
in order to offer to interested researchers. Supplies are scarce, but we
currently have a good stock. The bitter tea is made by steeping about 1
tablespoon herb for 10–15 minutes. It is also utilized in
smoking blends. For more info on this plant and other dream
herbs, see the Book
Drugs of the

CAMU
CAMU BERRIES Myciaria dubia
These berries, from a bush that grows in
swampy and flooded areas of the Amazon, are the highest natural source of
vitamin C! Very rich in iron, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin,
beta carotene, minerals and amino acids including serine, valine, and
leucine. The terpenes alpha-pinene and d-limonene are also found in these
impressively nutritious fruits. Studies show Camu Camu to have strong
antioxidant effects. Utilized here in North America to alleviate
depression and wean people off pharmaceutical antidepressants. It is also
proving a beneficial treatment for herpes. Because of its antioxidant,
emollient and slightly astringent properties it’s becoming popular in
cosmetic products, especially shampoos and conditioners. It is said to
revitalize and strengthen hair. The sour berry powder can be mixed with
water or juice, it is even made into an ice cream in Peru! Recommended
usage is 1/2 teaspoon 2 to 4 times a day. We enjoy it mixed with fresh
lemon juice, water and a little honey. Our Camu Camu is ecologically
wildcrafted in the Peruvian Amazon where it is pulped, frozen, then
shipped to Lima, macerated and dehydrated. This process preserves the
phytonutrient content of the berries producing by far the finest product
available, with a vitamin C content of 13–16%! Please note that most of
the Camu Camu available is cut with maltodextrin and is a light colored
powder with a sour taste, ours is not cut with anything, is dark in color
and has a strong sour-bitter flavor because of the extremely high vitamin
C content.

CATUABA
Erythroxylum catuaba
NEW!!
The bark of
this wild relative of the Coca plant (Erythroxylum coca )
is known amongst some Amazonian herbalists as the supreme
aphrodisiac for men and women, and has been highly regarded for
many generations. It is a mild CNS stimulant that is used to
balance and tonify the nervous system. It is used in folk
remedies to increase libido, for impotence, as a cardiotonic, to
sharpen memory, and for all manner of nervous conditions
including anxiety, insomnia, exhaustion and nerve pain. Clinical
studies have revealed Catuaba’s antibacterial and antiviral
properties, showing it to be effective against E. coli
and most significantly to inhibit the absorption HIV into cells.
Unlike its sister, Catuaba does not contain cocaine, but a host
of interesting alkaloids, sterols, terpenes, lignans, and
flavonoids. Catuaba is often taken alone or with Muira Puama,
traditionally infused overnight in cold water, steeped as a tea
or decocted for greater potency, 1/2–1 Tablespoon per dose.
Its mild bitter flavor also makes an excellent cordial and holds
potential as an herbal beer. It can be taken daily for its tonic
action, the only known side effects being erotic dreams and
feelings! We find it produces a gentle stimulation with a
magnification of consciousness and tactile awareness, especially
for men. We’ve had very positive reports of
blending Catuaba with Mulungu. Confusion exists regarding the actual species of plant
known as Catuaba, with at least 4 unrelated botanicals being
marketed as such. We offer what is considered the true Catuaba,
sustainably harvested in Brazil.
Wildcrafted
cut and sifted Brazilian Catuaba bark $10/100 grams or $26/lb

own, a small pinch of Chamairo has a mild astringent taste, yet
when mixed with a traditional Coca quid it blossoms with an
exceptional sweet taste, somewhat like powdered sugar! It is
thought to enhance the actions of Coca and is reportedly
sometimes chewed with alkali (baking soda works), but without
the Coca, for its own effects. It is also a traditional
digestive tonic. Chamairo’s capacity for potentiating other
bioactive herbs (we've heard positive effects with Catuaba) and its promise as a condiment is still
unexplored. We have secured a small supply of finely shredded vine
bark, wildcrafted by the Tacana in north west Bolivia and are
pleased to offer it here for the first time. Limited supply.

CHANCA
PIEDRA Phyllanthus niruri
This small annual herb, native to the
Amazon and other tropical regions, is a highly beneficial plant that’s
gaining worldwide attention as an important and safe medicinal. Long
employed by indigenous healers for its cleansing and tonifying action on the
liver, kidney and gallbladder, as a painkiller and to treat a wide array of
ailments including digestive disturbances, malaria, diabetes, parasites,
colds and flus. The name Chanca Piedra literally means "stone
breaker" referring to its effectiveness in expelling kidney, bladder
and gallstones. Nicole Maxwell, author of the classic Witch Doctor’s
Apprentice, recognized Chanca Piedra as one of the most important
medicines of the Amazon. Over the years hundreds of clinical studies confirm
its ability to prevent and expel kidney and gallstones, offer cellular
protection to toxins, heal the liver, lower blood pressure and help with
diabetes. German case studies show 94% success with completely eliminating
stones and restoring proper kidney and gallbladder function in just one to
two weeks. It is an antispasmodic and pain reliever reported to be seven
times more potent than aspirin or acetaminophen. It has strong antibacterial
and antiviral action, showing great promise with hepatitis B virus and HIV.
All of these properties are attributed to a wide spectrum of unique
phytochemicals including alkaloids, lignans, glycosides, flavonoids,
ellagitannins and phenylpropanoids. Everyone, even those in good health,
will benefit from using this herb periodically throughout the year to
cleanse the body and maintain optimal wellness. 1–2 teaspoons steeped as
pleasant tasting tea and drunk daily.

CHIA SEED Salvia
hispanica
The tiny seed of the Chia plant was once a staple food and
medicine throughout Central America. Traditionally the seeds
were mixed with water to treat constipation, sore throat,
irritated skin, digestive disturbance, prostate problems, to
cleanse the eyes and increase the efficacy of other medicines.
The seeds are a good source of B vitamins, calcium (100 grams of
seeds contains roughly 5x that of milk!), phosphorus, zinc,
boron (an essential trace mineral deficient in modern diets) and
copper. Chia has excellent protein, containing around 20% with
all essential amino acids. A top source for omega3 essential
fatty acids and contains several antioxidants, making it a more
stable source for EFA’s than flax or hemp seed. Easily
digestible, Chia is rich in mucilloid soluble fiber. When mixed
with water or stomach juices, a gel forms that creates a barrier
between the carbohydrates and digestive enzymes, therefore
digestion is slow and uniform, without spikes in blood sugar
levels, providing abundant energy and allaying hunger. Thus Chia
is useful for athletics, diabetes and weight loss. Mix one part
seed to ten parts water and stir thoroughly for several minutes.
This forms a highly versatile gel that can be drunk as is, mixed
with fruit juices for "Chia fresca" or used as a
thickening agent in recipes. The seeds can also be added to
cereals, breads, crackers, smoothies, etc. We have a new book on
the history and uses Chia available in our Books
section.

CHLORELLA Chlorella pyrenoidosa
Chlorella is an amazing
single cell freshwater green MICROALGAE
that is the superfood of choice for over 10 million people
worldwide. The first known form of plant life with a true
nucleus, it has survived for 2.5 billion years because of its
extremely tough outer cell wall and its ability to quadruple in
quantity every 20 hours, making it the fastest growing plant on
earth! The most extensive scientifically researched foodstuff
and #1 supplement in Japan. NASA believes it to be the ideal
food for long term space travel and colonization. Chlorella is
said to be the most powerful yet gentle detoxifying whole food
known.
Chlorella contains an impressive 60+% bioavailable protein;
providing 19 amino acids including all essential aminos in
excellent proportions. It is high in enzymes, vitamins A, B1,
B2, B3, B5(niacin), B6, B12, C, E, K, an array of carotenes,
folic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, phosphorus,
iodine and exceptionally high in iron. Richest of all the edible
algaes in essential fatty acids. It has the highest levels of
chlorophyll of any natural source, up to 5 to 10 times that of
Spirulina! Chlorophyll kills harmful bacteria, is nearly
identical to hemoglobin in blood and is a remarkable agent for
blood building, cleansing and tissue repair. Chlorella is by far
the richest source for RNA/DNA, which when taken in foods
provides material for cellular repair and revitalization,
contributing to rapid healing, greater energy and longer life
span. The nucleus of the chlorella cell contains a unique
nucleotide-peptide complex known as Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF)
which actually promotes cell growth in the body, stimulating
tissue repair and healing to an extent not previously found in
any other food, it even increases growth rates in children!
Chlorella produces an incredible enhancement of metabolic
function, rebuilds and fortifies the immune system, slows aging,
greatly improves digestion and stimulates the growth of
beneficial bacteria in the bowels. It is highly effective
helping the body to breakdown and detoxify a wide variety of
environmental toxins. In fact, Chlorella’s outer cell wall has
the unique ability to bind with heavy metals and persistent
toxicants like DDT and PCBs and carry them safely out of the
body. The cell wall also contains a substructure of complex
polysaccharides that stimulate interferon production to fight
off viruses and other foreign agents. Clinical research has
shown chlorella to aid in protecting against and healing an
amazingly wide spectrum of maladies including: colds and flus,
liver disease, high cholesterol, tumors/cancers, ulcers,
Alzheimers, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, candida overgrowth,
loss of vision, even radiation sickness.
A starting dose is about 1 teaspoon a day, working up to 4 or
more over several weeks. More should be taken when illness is
present, as a safeguard when traveling and during the cold and
flu season. Chlorella has a much milder taste compared to other
algaes like Spirulina and is excellent mixed into juice,
smoothies, sauces, soups and other foods. Blending with equal
parts honey is a real treat, kids love it! Chlorella is known to
increase the growth of lactobacillus acidophilus and enhances
the preparation of fermented foods and drinks such as
sauerkraut, yogurt and kefir. The most pronounced effects are
usually experienced after consuming Chlorella daily for 2-3
months; increased energy accompanied by mental
clarity and a remarkable feeling of well being. Great for
everyone, healthy or ill, children, elders, even pets!
Chlorella’s tough outer wall of cellulose is largely
indigestible, but the Japanese have come up with several methods
to overcome this problem. Our Chlorella is exposed to supersonic
sound, which vibrates the cells together weakening the cell
walls and causing small ruptures. The chlorella is then spray
dried, further permeating the cell walls without completely
fracturing them. This process produces a beautiful deep green
powder that is one of the most digestible products while
preserving the high nutrient content that is partially destroyed
by other production methods. The protein content of our
Chlorella is typically 65% while Chlorella produced by the
patented dyno-mill method is closer to 50%.
Our Chlorella is naturally cultivated in sun exposed
ponds in Japan. Sun exposure assures the highest levels of
chlorophyll, CGF and other phytonutrients. Growth, harvest and
processing is closely monitored, our Chlorella powder tests
negative for all pollutants and microbes.
Chlorella keeps well. For optimum nutrient preservation we
suggest storing in an air tight glass container under
refrigeration. One pound fits into a one quart mason jar.

CHUCHUHUASI Maytenus macrocarpa
The bark of this
medicinal rainforest tree is also known as Chuchuhuasa (not to
be confused with Heisteria pallida, Cheiloclinum
cognatum and several others with this common name). One of
the foremost herbal medicines in Amazonia, used as a general
cleansing immuno-fortifier for thousands of years. Traditional
healers have shown how they use the bark for colds, flu,
infections, migraine, adrenal support, respiratory problems,
rheumatism, menstrual regulation and many common illnesses. It
is valued as a pain reliever and muscle relaxant. As a
"teacher plant" during dietas it is said to
fortify the body and teach one resistance and endurance in every
sense. Famous as an aphrodisiac. Italian phytochemical trails
clinically proved it is a highly effective antiinflammatory, has
very high antitumor activity (especially skin tumors) and is an
antioxidant radioprotective agent. Sesquiterpenic and spermidine
alkaloids, catechins, cumarins, saponins and triterpenes are
present. Chuchuhuasi synergizes well with other herbs; one great
aphrodisiacal blend is Chuchuhuasi, Clavohuasca, Iporuru and
Cacao. Traditionally soaked in alcohol or infused into a
full-bodied deep red tea that is pleasantly energizing. 1
teaspoon per cup of tea, best with a little honey. 1/2 teaspoon
powder can also be taken with juice or water.

CLAVOHUASCA
Tynanthus panurensis "Clove Vine"
This exotic aphrodisiac is a
highly regarded, and until recently, well kept secret amongst folks in the
Amazon. This rare vine is in the same family as the "mother of all
medicines", ayahuasca. It bears the enchanting aroma and flavor of
cloves. Clavohuasca is often mentioned primarily as a woman’s
aphrodisiac, but in fact both men and women greatly enjoy its effects on
sexual potency and it is widely used in Peru and Brazil to treat frigidity
and to support healthy erections. The vine has analgesic properties and is
traditionally utilized to treat rheumatic pains. It is also an excellent
digestive aid and it is sometimes an admixture to ayahuasca brews to help
mitigate the purgative effects. We have also heard reports of its
utilization treating thyroid imbalances. Very little research has been done on its
constituents, an alkaloid has been reported and the substance eugenol is
responsible for the clove-like aroma, it may contain other intriguing
unexplored compounds. The most common aphrodisiacal preparation in South
America is made by macerating the vine bark in cane alcohol. Many also
find it to make an enticing cordial after soaking in brandy for several
weeks. It can be made into tea, about 1–2 teaspoons per cup, or mixed
with hot chocolate. Our Clavohuasca is sustainably wildcrafted in
northeastern Peru.

COCONUT
OIL, RAW Cocos nucifera "Virgin Oil de Coco-Creme"
Coconut oil or coconut butter (as
it’s known below 78° F in its solid state) has been employed as a
medicine and food since antiquity. Widely used in Ayurvedic concoctions,
it is considered the most cooling of all therapeutic oils. Unlike the
deleterious cholesterol-rich saturated fats found in dairy products and
meat, raw coconut oil is a cholesterol-free beneficent saturated fat
comprised of mostly medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) which are digested
and metabolized easily, being converted directly into energy rather than
being stored as fat. Raw coconut oil has less calories than any other fat.
The MCFAs in raw coconut oil are capric acid, caprylic acid, lauric acid
and myristic acid. which display potent antibacterial, antifungal,
antiviral and antiprotozoal properties. Laboratory tests have shown these
MCFAs to be useful for flu, herpes, ulcers, hepatitis C, AIDS, pneumonia,
candida, fungal skin infections, and parasites. Raw coconut oil is
antioxidant and helps stimulates proper thyroid function, aiding weight
loss and assisting to lower cholesterol by converting it to pregnenolone,
which is restorative to the body/mind and helps balance hormone levels.
Consuming raw coconut oil regularly may also balance blood sugar. Taken
internally and applied topically it is highly nourishing, regenerative and
moisturizing to the skin. Widely used in the Tropics to protect skin and
hair from the sun. It makes an exceptional massage and body oil. With its
sensuous silky feel, delicious aroma and taste, we consider it the supreme
erotic oil. Because coconut oil is one of the most naturally stable oils
and unlike other oils does not form carcinogenic trans-fatty acids during
heating, it is the ideal oil for cooking and imparts a wonderful flavor.
Raw coconut oil can be used in place of butter/oils in any recipe. It can
also be eaten straight and is a great creamy addition to smoothies. 1–2
tablespoons a day recommended, more for therapeutic doses. It blends
fabulously with Cacao and is indispensable for making raw chocolate bars.
Our pure raw coconut oil is the very finest, a one of a kind oil, known as
Virgin Oil de Coco-Creme. In our experience, it has the highest
therapeutic value of any coconut oil, superior to other raw virgin oils on
the market. When solid it melts easily to touch and is crystal clear when
liquid. Extracted from fresh organic Indonesian coconut milk using cold
pressing and centrifugation. Unlike other coconut oils there is no
chemicals, heating, drying, or fermentation at any stage of the processes.
A pure but unrefined "pharmaceutical" grade, sweet smelling and
tasting, light raw oil with a shelf life of at least 3 years.

COPAIBA RESIN Copaifera
officinalis
An earthy sweet smelling oleoresin
that is widely used as a fragrance in cosmetic products. This thin golden oil is
a sustainable rainforest product, Copaiba trees are tapped similar to harvesting
maple syrup, a single tree providing around 10 gallons of resin annually. This
ancient jungle medicine has long been utilized in western herbalism, its
properties were first introduced to Europe by the Jesuits in the early 1600s.
Clinical research verifies its traditional use as an antiinflammatory,
analgesic, antiseptic wound healer, antibacterial/ antifungal agent, and for
ulcers, respiratory afflictions, and urinary infection. Recent studies have
focused on promising anticancer and antitumor actions when used internally or
externally. Rich in sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, and terpenic acids. A few drops
of resin in water or honey is excellent for sore throats. Soothing to insect
bites and reported to be very effective for nail fungus. Considered a mild
stimulant taken internally. Makes an excellent massage oil for inflamed muscles
when diluted 1 to 10 in a carrier oil. For serious skin problems or inflammation
small amounts can be applied undiluted, though some individuals are sensitive
and experience topical irritation. Internally 5-15 drops 2-3 times a day is
recommended. Large amounts are emetic. We offer pure undiluted oleoresin from
Peru.

CORDYCEPS
MUSHROOM Cordyceps sinensis
A rare fungus that parasitizes moth larvae. Greatly revered in Tibet, called
Dong Chong Xia Cao ("winter worm, summer grass"). Himalayan people
compete with yaks to harvest the fungus because they value it as a tonic for
reproductive health and potency. Himalayan sherpas collect Cordyceps just before
the yaks begin their springtime climb high into the steep ravines to eat the
"summer grass" prior to migrating back down the mountain for mating.
One of the most prized herbs in all of Chinese medicine. Modern studies show
Cordyceps to be something of a panacea: strongly antioxidant, antiviral and
bacterial, anticancer, moderates blood pressure and blood sugar, reduces
cholesterol, protects and tonifies the liver, kidney, heart and nervous system.
Clinical studies confirm its ability to improve sexual "performance."
During the 1993 Olympics, the Chinese women’s track team broke the world
record by an astounding time, investigations revealed they were using Cordyceps.
Shows promise in treating depression and has traditional use curing opium
addiction. We find it to be an energizing cognitive stimulant, producing an
altered, enhanced state. We offer dried powdered mycelium organically grown on
brown rice or Purple Corn (not larvae!). 1–2 teaspoons of powder a day
recommended, mixed in food, capsules or tea. For

form of long slices of root of an unusual species of Salvia (sage).
Esteemed by the Chinese for thousands of years as an unsurpassed
circulatory stimulant. Extensive research has shown Dan Shen to improve coronary circulation, expanding the arteries and
improving blood flow to the heart. It is also used traditionally to
treat menstrual irregularities and to protect the liver. Recent
pharmacological tests show Dan Shen root to be an excellent
anti-anxiety medicine as well, producing mental calmness and
relaxation, releasing inner stress. The complex chemical compounds
responsible for this beneficial effect have been discovered to act
upon the so-called Valium receptor sites in the brain. Best taken as a
tea, a regular dose of 10 grams decocts into a pleasant tasting red
colored tea.

ELDERBERRIES
Sambucus nigra
The Elder tree was a panacea of the ancients, cultivated since prehistoric
times. A wealth of folklore surrounds this revered European medicinal. In its
branches is said to dwell a wise spirit, the Elder Mother, who watches over the
plant and bestows healing upon those who honor it. The clusters of black purple
berries have long been used for making medicinal wines, an esteemed ale called
ebulon, syrups and jams. Rich in vitamins A and C, immune stimulating flavonoids
and anthocyanin. Elderberry wine is an old fashion cure for colds and rheumatic
pains. Elderberries promote sweating, helping to break fever. Clinical trials
show antibacterial properties and Israeli studies have shown the berries to be
highly effective against flu and other viruses. There are endless ways to
prepare the dried berries; steeped as tea, rehydrated in a little water, ground
with honey, boiled down into a syrup, steeped in vinegar or wine, made into jam,
fermented into a wine or ale, even made into pies and pastries! Recipes for elder ales and wines can be found in Sacred and Healing Herbal

ELEUTHERO ROOT Eleutherococcus senticosus
The roots of this Asian shrub, distantly related to true Ginseng and at one time
known as Siberian Ginseng, are one of the
top adaptogens, in use for over 2000 years. Produces a generalized balancing and
healing effect, increasing endurance from all types of stress, whether it be
physiological, emotional, psychological or environmental. Extensive clinical
studies done in Russia have shown Eleuthero root to enhance mental acuity and
physical endurance, improving the use of oxygen by the exercising muscle.
Lignans, polysaccharides, triterpene saponins, glycosides, coumarins and
phenalacrylic acid derivatives (eleutherosides) are thought responsible for the
root’s powerful immunomodulating properties. Research has shown it to offer
protection against radiation exposure and cancer development. Aids
detoxification, protects against colds and flus. Reduces the harmful effects of
stress by helping the adrenal glands function. Helpful for those recovering from
drug misuse, especially stimulants. In this age of widespread pollution and
fast-paced, high stress living, this herb is a must! Best when taken continually
over a period of time, 2–5 grams (1–2 tablespoons) a day is recommended.
Traditionally 6–8 weeks of usage are followed by a 1–2 week break before
continuing. Large amounts may cause MAO inhibition. Mixes well with many foods
and juice.

The oldest still-living tree species on
earth, being essentially unchanged since the dinosaur times 200 million years
ago. A huge tree that can live for thousands of years and survive extreme
conditions. A Gingko tree growing near ground zero survived and resprouted after
the Hiroshima nuclear blast! It is thought that Gingko’s resilience is due to
the unusual compounds it manufactures. Standardized leaf extracts are now the
number one bestselling herbal ingredient in Germany as circulatory and brain
stimulants. This could be the organophile’s smart drug. Contains
free-radical-scavenging compounds, increases blood flow and oxygenates the body.

GOLD ROOT Heliopsis
longipes
Slowly chewing a
matchstick-sized piece of gold root creates an intense tingling sensation in the
lips and mouth, subsiding in a few minutes. These roots are harvested from wild
plants in the high forests of tropical southern Mexico. Local herbalists use it
for toothache (claimed to halt the pain almost immediately) and it is also used
for oral cleansing, to clean and whiten the teeth. Rich in immune-boosting
alkamides, some of the active constituents in Echinacea. Experiments with the pleasant but dramatic skin tingling led us to
use it erotically, as the sensation can be shared from mouth to other skin
areas... (A Swedish magazine, Aftonbladet, with 2 million
circulation, surveyed aphrodisiac herbs and gave our gold root first prize in
the oral sex test.) Always in high demand, supplies of this hard to find herb
are sporadic. We once again have a limited amount on hand.

GREEN TEA Camelia
sinensis = Thea sinensis
The Holy Sacrament of Zen
has an ancient and noble history as a drug plant ally in the Far East. The
scientific name, Thea (=goddess) underscores the revered status of the
beautiful plant from whose leaves tea is made. From emperor to peasant, mongol
to priest, the brew has been the stimulant of choice for countless millions
across eons of time. It has captivated the souls of humans and has been
worshipped, or perhaps more accurately has been a aid for worshipping, with
Teaism being perhaps one of the world’s largest cults. There are many forms of
tea and as many methods in preparing it.
Most tea products and
blends are from fermented leaves which are virtually composted in great heaps
before being slowly roasted. These are the common black teas. We find the
stimulant alkaloids and fragrant volatile oils are seriously degraded by this
fermenting process. Green Tea is an unfermented leaf product with quite distinct
properties and flavor. It is made from only the finest grade of fresh leaves,
briefly steamed and/or dried rapidly in copper pans over low heat to arrest
enzymatic activity and thus preserve taste and nutrients. The leaves are rolled
in the palm of the hand as they dry, to break up internal cell walls and crumble
them in a uniform cut. This product contains up to 4.5% caffeine (theine) and
theophylline with small amounts of theobromine and xanthine as well as 15%
gallotannic acid and 0.75% of a yellow volatile oil responsible for the
inscrutably delightful odor and taste.
To prepare unfermented Green Tea into one of the finest brews, we recommend
following a very specific recipe. Take pure cold water and bring it just under a
boil. In a second pan place one teaspoon of Green Tea per cup or two being
served. Remove the water from the heat and let it cool just a bit. Pour the
desired amount of this water over the leaves, but be ready to act quickly. Let
this steep for about a minute or so then strain off into cups or a preheated
teapot. This prevents cooking the leaves and allows the readily soluble
xanthines and oils to infuse without destroying their subtle flavors while
avoiding the release of the undesirable tannic acid irritants. Moderate
consumption is felt as an invigorating mental tonic. It refreshes a tired
spirit, speeding up thought processes and opening the higher intellectual
centers. We experience this as a psychic opening of the upper forehead. Beware
of drinking too many cups: you may find yourself pacing wildly in circles.
Green Tea is an excellent source of immune building polyphenols and other
antioxidants. Believed to offer protection against heart disease, cancer, tooth decay,
aids digestion and boosts longevity when consumed regularly. Rich in vitamins
and minerals. Other than certain mushrooms, Green Tea is the only source of the
amino acid L-theanine, said to counter many of the negative effects of caffeine
by stimulating alpha brainwaves which promote a state of relaxed awareness.
We offer five distinct
varieties for those just getting to know Green Tea as well as discerning connoisseurs-

both an aphrodisiac as well as a treatment for headache, fever and cramps. The
high content of tetra-methyl-xanthine, hypoxanthine, guaranine, theophylline and
theobromine accounts for its intensely pleasurable stimulant effects, which
propel the mind and body for up to six hours. Prescribed as a replacement drug
for those who cannot tolerate coffee and tea, but its unusual saponin content (limbonine)
underlies the longterm tonic effect (Ginseng owes its activity to saponins).
Known as a healthy stimulant and perfect sustaining food substitute during fasts
and diets, it’s also fun! About 1/2 to 1 tablespoon is a dose. We now offer
whole seeds so you can grind your own powder fresh in a coffee mill. One of the
crops of Amazonia with positive ecological status: supports the peoples and
habitats of the Amazon. For a more

GUAYUSA Ilex
guayusa
Guayusa is a tree native to the
eastern montana of Columbia, Ecuador and Peru and closely related to Yerba Mate.
Guayusa leaves contain a significant amount of caffeine and have been used for
their healthy stimulating properties for thousands of years. While Yerba Mate
has enjoyed ever increasing popularity, Guayusa has remained shrouded in
mystery. In Ecuadorian Amazonia, Guayusa tea is drunk as a general tonic, a
treatment for headaches, stomach problems and for ritual purification. It is
considered a productive aphrodisiac. Taken with ayahuasca it is said to
"kill the bitter taste", "to prevent hangover" and to
"give strength to deal with ayahuasca." The tea is also drunk
shamanically to enhance dreaming, and is reported by some to consistently
produce lucid dreams. Leaves of a Shuar Indian strain of Guayusa were found to
contain 7.6% caffeine, making it the most potent caffeine plant known. However,
on average, most leaves, including those we offer, contain 1–2% or less.
Guayusa brews a very tasty tea, somewhat reminiscent of Green Tea but with a
sweet aftertaste. It has a very low tannin content and therefore can be steeped
for a long time to bring out the full flavor of the leaves. Use about 1–2
teaspoons per cup, less for the powdered leaf. It is commonly brewed with ginger. The tea produces a
pleasant state of enhanced sensory awareness without any jittery or edgy
effects. In fact, in Ecuador it is said to be "good to calm nerves"
and "good for women who are pregnant." Very little modern research has
been done with this amazing plant, in addition to the caffeine, triterpenes and
chlorogenic acid derivatives have been found. We feel confident that future
studies will reveal more immunomodulating and antioxidant phytochemicals like
those found in Yerba Mate and Green Tea, and that Guayusa’s relative obscurity
will be remedied as this beneficial stimulant becomes more widely available. We
are pleased to offer premium grade leaf
from Ecuador, traditionally cultivated without any chemicals.

HIMEMATSUTAKE
MUSHROOM Agaricus brasiliensis
Agaricus brasiliensis comes from
an area near Sao Paulo, Brazil. Extensive experiments by researchers at the
National Cancer Institute and in Tokyo demonstrated this mushroom to be very
promising as an immunostimulant. It contains high levels of a unique beta
glucan polysaccharide, evidently the compound responsible for the rapid
anticancer and antiviral activity found in their tests. In addition to this
anticancer effect through induction of cytokines, Himematsutake is shown to
reduce blood pressure, modulate blood sugar, lower cholesterol and aid in
reversing the effects of arteriosclerosis. 1–3 teaspoons (2–6 grams) of

HONEYBUSH TEA Cyclopia
intermedia/subternata
A highly esteemed drink of the Khoi and
San people. Endemic to the Cape fynbos region of South Africa. Made from the
leaves, twigs and blossoms of many species of small leguminous Cyclopia shrubs
and named for their sweetly fragrant yellow flowers. The tea is produced in much
the same way as Rooibos, though the "fermentation" process is
sometimes longer to achieve its rich brown color and sweet smell. Dr. H. De
Lange of the National Institute at Kirstenbosch sees Honeybush as "an
evolutionary drink like wine, because there are so many plant varieties and
possibilities of creating a range of teas, each with its own distinct
flavor."
Honeybush contains trace amounts of caffeine (0.01% compared to 3% or more in
black tea), yet is calming in its effects. Low in tannins, high in vitamin C,
very rich in calcium, potassium and other minerals. Contains anti-diabetic
pinitol and antioxidant isoflavones, coumestans and xanthones. Research on
Honeybush is not as extensive as Rooibos, but it is showing to have a wide
variety of benefits -- antiinflammatory, anticarcinogenic, antimicrobial and
antifungal. Becoming a popular remedy for menopause, helping to alleviate hot
flashes and prevent osteoporosis. Tones the urinary system, aids digestion and
is good for psoriasis and other skin disorders. It is even said to stimulate
milk flow in lactating mothers.
Similar in taste to Rooibos, this delectable tea brews an apricot to deep pink
color with a mild sweet taste, floral and smooth, with a hint of spicy
undertones. Unlike many teas, prolonged boiling at low temperatures actually
enhances the flavor. 2-3 teaspoons per cup of tea should be infused for a
minimum of 10 minutes. Like Rooibos, the same batch of tea can be steeped
several times. Fantastic hot, cold, sweetened or unsweetened. Terrific when
blended 50/50 with Rooibos.
The Honeybush industry is still in its infancy and much of it is harvested from
the wild. Our premium grade, certified organic tea comes from Cyclopia
intermedia and Cyclopia subternata grown on locally run cooperative
farms in South Africa, so wild populations are not impacted.

IPORURU
Alchornea castaneifolia
Iporuru, or Hiporuru, is a shrubby Amazonian tree and important
medicinal. Used in Peruvian dietas as a "teacher
plant" and occasionally added to ayahuasca brews. Well known in
Peru for its antiinflammatory and antiarthritic action and being
utilized in North America by athletes, yogis and herbalists for its
ability to support muscle and joint structure, aiding flexibility of
movement and range of motion. An effective topical pain reliever when
rubbed into injuries. In parts of Peru it is hailed as a useful
aphrodisiac, increasing female fertility and a remedying male
impotency. Other folk uses include treating colds, coughs, diarrhea
and diabetes. Taken regularly it produces an interesting state of
heightened awareness. Laboratory research has shown Iporuru to have
antitumor, antifungal and antiviral actions. Analysis shows saponins,
phenols, steroids, flavonols, flavones, tannins, xanthones and
alkaloids including alchorneine also found in Alan (Alchornea
floribunda) of western Africa, see Recording
#124. 1–2 grams (about 1/2 teaspoon) is taken 2–3 times a day, in
capsules or stirred into liquids.
#113. Iporuru
can only be harvested in the Amazon’s dry season, since it spends
most of the rainy season underwater. For most uses 1-2 grams (about
1/2 teaspoon) is taken 2-3 times a day brewed as a tea, or taken in
capsules..

KOLA NUT
POWDER Cola nitida = Cola acuminata
Indigenous to coastal rainforests of West and Central Africa, the seeds of this
beautiful tree have been prized for their powerful stimulant effect. A member of
the same family as Cacao, the Sterculiaceae. The whole seed is carefully peeled
to remove the two large cotyledons within the kernel shell. These are dried to
form the Kola "nuts" which are powdered for use. This powder contains
between 1% and 3.5% caffeine (usually about 2%). Theobromine is also present in
amounts just under one percent. The fresh Kola nuts are particularly enjoyed
where the trees grow, and this preference is known to have solid grounds in
scientific fact: the xanthines (caffeine and theobromine) are bound together
with an unusual compound called kolacatechin, which itself breaks down upon
drying into the tannin Kola Red. The kolacatechin allows the bound chemicals to
be absorbed in a joined fashion, with a unique synergistic action not the same
as when experienced as individual substances in dried Kola powder. For those of
us not so fortunate as to have access to a nearby Kola tree in season, the dried
product must suffice. In fact, the dried Kola nut has been so craved and
appreciated in Africa that extensive intertribal trade networks managed to have
passed it from coast to coast, north to south. In past generations, the Kola nut
was treated as a unit of money.
The reddish-brown powder may be taken in its natural state, either eaten
straight, mixed with honey or packed in capsules. A normal dose is 1-2
teaspoons. Kola is traditionally eaten before a meal to aid digestion and
thought to improve the flavor of anything eaten after it. An interesting drink
may be prepared by stirring the Kola powder into cold water (a tablespoon per
cup) and gradually bringing it to a near boil, reducing the heat to simmer for
five minutes before straining. The drink may be sweetened to taste, but it is
best without cream or other flavorings. It has a unique flavor, not unpleasant.
The many types of soft drinks which use some Kola essence have a hint of this
taste. In fact the original Coca-Cola got its name from Kola nut and coca
leaf once being major herbal ingredients.
The effects usually are first noticed as an increase in depth of breathing
accompanied by spine tingling rushes of energy which begin in the lower back and
swirl up to the base of the head, climaxing with a tightening of the scalp and a
feeling of the hair standing on end. It can range from a quick flash up the
spine to a full-on, one-by-one opening of the chakras as a kundalini-like
mobilization of vital force rises to the crown of the head. Most people notice
this sort of experience, especially those who tend to have body consciousness as
an inclination. Kola usually comes on very smoothly, accelerating somatic and
cerebral energy for about an hour. It is good to use that peak time for enjoying
the ride. Since the skin’s pleasure receptors are especially effected, the
sensation of touch becomes very pleasurable indeed. Delicate stroking or very
light massage can be an enjoyable thing to share with a partner. This is
enhanced by calming the mind and focusing on the surface of the skin while in a
relaxed posture. The combination of an alert, receptive state of mental
stimulation with the sensitization of pleasure in touch make Kola a
delightful experience.

LICORICE
ROOT Glycyrrhiza glabra
Nearly 50 times as sweet as sugar, Licorice root is often thought of as a candy,
it is in fact one of the most valuable, widely prescribed herbs in the world.
Soothing and healing to the whole digestive tract, considered a mild laxative.
Great for sore throats, coughs and other respiratory problems. A powerful tonic
for the endocrine system, rejuvenates exhausted adrenals. One of the active
constituents, glycyrrhizin, has powerful antiinflammatory/antiarthritic action
comparable to hydrocortisone. Glycyrrhizin has also been used to treat chronic
hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. A great addition to any herbal tea blend,
Licorice can also be made into syrups and candies. Because of its sweet taste it’s
one of the easiest herbs to give children. It’s a common flavoring agent added
to tobacco. Some studies done with concentrated licorice extracts have suggested
that it may cause water retention and raise blood pressure levels, yet it must
be remembered that the whole herb has been widely and safely prescribed for
thousands of years without these effects.

LION’S MANE
MUSHROOM Hericium erinaceus
An unusual looking mushroom, forms white balls covered in small tenticle like
growths. Native to stumps and logs of temperate forests throughout the northern
hemisphere. Typically used in Chinese medicine for digestive ailments. Native
Americans used the dried powdered mushroom for wound healing. A seafood like
flavor and texture make it a choice culinary fungus when fresh. The focus of recent
studies, Lion’s Mane contains a number of polysaccharides with antitumor
properties, other compounds and fatty acids that stimulate the immune system. A
group of compounds named erinacines have been discovered that may stimulate the
regrowth of neurons, regenerating nerve tissue in the brain. This makes the
fungus an auspicious candidate for cognitive enhancement and the treatment of
the neurological degeneration associated with Alzheimer’s and senility. 1–3
teaspoons (2–6 grams) a day recommended. For

LUCUMA Pouteria
obovata (=Lucuma obovata)
The fruit of this sacred tree, a sapote
relative, was the most spiritually important fruit of the ancient cultures of
coastal Peru, archaeological evidence dating back 10,000 years. It played a
central role in creation myths, the nutritious breast like fruits being
associated with fertility and nourishment. The fruits superficially resemble a
nippled avocado with yellow-orange pulp "the color of the light stolen from
a thousand sunsets." The pulp has an attractive aroma and a rich
maple-cream flavor. It is high in carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins and minerals,
including significant amounts of beta-carotene, niacin and iron. The dried
powdered fruit is a good addition to herbal blends, mellowing the taste of more
pungent and bitter herbs and is a essential addition to smoothies. It synergizes
incredibly with the flavors of Cacao, Maca and Mesquite. Widely used in the fine
food preparations of Peru, the culinary possibilities are endless. We are
pleased to bring this ancient crop to a wider audience!

LYCII (GOJI) BERRIES Lycium barbarum
"Gou Qi Zi"
Lycii are pink-red berries of a
spiny solanaceous bush native to isolated areas of China, Tibet and Mongolia.
Also known as Goji berries or wolfberries. A traditional Chinese longevity enhancer,
countless stories dating back nearly 2000 years concern its miraculous ability
to prolong and improve life. It was a staple food of the great sage and
herbalist, Li Ch’ing Yuen who was reported to be over 250 years old when he
died in 1930! Lycii berries have been declared a national treasure by the State
Scientific and Technological Commission in China.
Lycii berries are an incredibly nutritionally rich herb/food containing 18 amino
acids, including all the essentials, and up to 21 important trace minerals such
as germanium, zinc, calcium, iron, copper, selenium, etc. Each raisin sized
berry is packed full of beta-carotene, in fact lycii berries are said to be the
richest carotenoid source of any known food plant! One of the more concentrated
sources for vitamin C. Rich in
vitamins B1, B2, B6 and E. These wonder berries also contain linoleic acid,
sesquiterpenoids, tetraterpenoids, beta-sisterol, betaine and immune
strengthening polysaccharides. One polysaccharide in the berries has been found
to induce secretion of rejuvenative growth hormone by the pituitary gland,
giving additional credit to Lycii as a revered antiaging herb.
Lycii are considered an aphrodisiac and fertility booster; clinical
studies have shown them to significantly raise testosterone levels in elderly
men. A mild antidepressant - prolonged daily use promotes
cheerfulness, vitality and clarity. Utilized in oriental medicine to tonify and
protect the kidneys and liver, nourish the blood and improve vision. Modern
research shows these delicious berries to enhance the immune system,
balance blood sugar, lower cholesterol, and build muscle. Lycii berries are a
favorite of the medal winning Chinese Olympic swim team. They have been
demonstrated to increase levels of the potent antioxidant
superoxide dismutase in the body. They are now being thoroughly scrutinized
for their anticancer activity. An antiobesity herb which stimulates the metabolism to burn
excess body fat.
Lycii berries are one of the simplest herbs to use, they are very sweet and
tasty, and can be used in food preparation and cooking just like raisins. Try
rehydrating them by soaking in water. Popular blended in smoothies or mixed into
oatmeal and cereal. Traditionally, the berries are boiled in light wine, then
this is used as broth stock in soup. A famed longevity tea is made from equal
parts Lycii and Schizandra berries. An excellent liver cleanse and tonic can be
made in the blender with 1/4 cup soaked berries, 1 tablespoon ground Milk
Thistle seed, 1 teaspoon Chlorella powder and 2 cups apple juice. We love to
chew these delightful berries as snacks daily. One half to one
ounce (1/8 - 1/4 cup) a day is the recommended intake. Eating more during the
