Below you
will find information on the four main categories of herbs we
carry along with listings of which herbs fit which categories,
you will notice many herbs fall into several. Following this are
alphabetically listed herb descriptions further detailing their
science, properties and lore.
APHRODISIACS
Through the
ages herbal aphrodisiacs have been the most sought after and
highly esteemed of plant medicines. These gifts of Aphrodite,
the Goddess of Love, inspire erotic arousal and desire, dissolve
inhibitions, and may even reverse impotence and frigidity.
Aphrodisiacs enhance sexual ability and agility, heightening the
body and mind’s sensitivity to pleasure and joy. Many tonify
the reproductive organs, greatly improving fertility. Some of
Aphrodite’s herbs can be highly personal; what works
wonders for one person or couple may not produce the same
effects for another. Dedicated to healing through pleasure, we
have carefully researched and explored many aphrodisiacs over
the years, we include the juiciest of what we have found here in
the catalog, including those with ancient histories as well as
current scientific studies demonstrating their efficacy. The primary aphrodisiac herbs we supply are: Cacao
Seed, Catuaba, Clavohuasca, Chuchuhuasi, Cordyceps, Damiana, Iporuru, Kola Nut, Maca Root, Moctezuma’s Secret drink blend,
Muira-Puama, Red Ginseng, Rhodiola Root, Suma Root, and Yohimbe. Secondary
aphrodisiacs and sexual tonics include: American Ginseng,
Ashwaghanda, Astragalus, Betel Nut, Coconut Oil, Guarana, Guayusa, He-Shou-Wu, Longan Berries, Lycii
Berries, Poria Mushrooms, Reishi Antlers, Schizandra Berries,
Shiitake Mushrooms.
IMMUNOSTIMULANTS
The most
important group of herbs for all of us, young and old, living
at this time in history when pollution, cancer and other diseases
have reached epidemic proportions. These are herbs that
strengthen and nourish the body’s natural immunity to
disease and toxins. Many of these herbs are adaptogens; they
increase the body’s resistance to a wide variety of stresses
and have a balancing and restorative effect on the body as a
whole. See the Book
Adaptogens. The majority of immunostimulants contain phytonutrients
that are powerful antioxidants or directly stimulate the bodies
endogenous production of antioxidants. Antioxidants enhance
health and longevity by neutralizing free radicals - unstable
oxygen molecules that damage cells, causing many
degenerative diseases and the aging process itself.

SEDATIVES
& HYPNOTICS
The herbal
sedatives and hypnotics we offer relax and nourish the nervous
system, help to relieve pain, reduce tension and anxiety, and
promote restful sleep without interfering with the natural sleep
cycles. They produce a calm and quiet state of mind, often
accompanied by mild euphoria. The primary sedatives &
hypnotics we supply are: Blue Water Lily Flowers, California
Poppy, Corydalis, Dan Shen, Kava, Sacred Lotus Flowers, Mayan Water Lily
Flowers, Mulungu, Valerian, and White Water Lily Flowers. Secondary herbs with
sedative action are: Ashwaghanda, Jujube Date, Longan
Berries, Manayupa, Poria Mushrooms, Purple Corn, Reishi Mushrooms, and Rooibos Tea.
STIMULANTS
Herbs to increase physical
and mental energy & endurance, to arouse the senses and
heighten awareness. Common stimulants such as coffee or black
tea are unbalancing to the central nervous system, over
activating the adrenal glands and depleting the bodies natural
energy reserves. Though some of the stimulants we supply contain
caffeine or related alkaloids, these often occur along with
other compounds that are more nourishing and balancing to the
body. Still, we urge that all stimulants containing caffeine
alkaloids (xanthines) be used with respect and care. For further
information on the xanthine rich herbs and other stimulants we
recommend Dale Pendell’s exciting book PharmakoDynamis.
The xanthine containing stimulants that we carry are: Cacao
Seed, Green Tea, Guarana, Guayusa, Kola Nut, White Tea, and Yerba Mate. The
xanthine free herbs with stimulating properties we offer are: American
Ginseng, Betel Nut, Calamus
Root, Catuaba, Chlorella, Chuchuhuasi, Cordyceps, Eleuthero Root, Ginkgo Leaves,

highest potency, finest quality herbs at reasonable prices.
The majority of our botanicals are either
ecologically wildcrafted, organically grown or cultivated without
chemicals. All our herbs are GMO free,
never irradiated, treated with sulfur or other preservatives.
For economy we package
most of our herbs in biodegradable true cellophane bags, for long
term storage we recommend air tight glass jars placed in a dark cupboard or refrigerator.
A WHOLESALE
pricelist is
available upon request.
Though we mention the
active chemical constituents throughout our catalog, we recognize that it
is the totality of the herb and the interaction with an
individual's biochemistry that is responsible for a therapeutic effect.
Admittedly, science has a way to go before it understands this intricacy.
For this reason we offer predominantly whole herbs, and a few whole herb extracts that we feel are of exceptional quality
and benefit.
We have access
to many more herbs than we can list, if you’re looking for
something you don’t see, just ask. We
occasionally get small batches of interesting herbs and
periodically make them available in limited quantities. Click on

ASHWAGHANDA Withania somnifera
"Indian Ginseng"
This ancient Ayurvedic herb
is a powerful adaptogen. In the Yoga of Herbs, authors Frawley
& Lad, say— "Ashwagandha holds a place in the Ayurvedic
pharmacology similar to Ginseng in Chinese medicine, yet it is far less
expensive. It is the best rejuvenative herb…in all conditions of
weakness and tissue deficiency in children, the elderly, those debilitated
by chronic diseases, those suffering from overwork, lack of sleep or
nervous exhaustion…inhibits aging and catalyzes the anabolic processes…one
of the best herbs for the mind upon which it is nurturing and clarifying.
It is calming and promotes deep, dreamless sleep." Tanganykans use
the root as a sexual stimulant, safe narcotic, sedative and tranquilizer.

Astragalus is considered the best tonic for young people.
Clinical studies have demonstrated the active principles in
Astragalus root enhances immune system function, serving to help

BALSAM OF PERU
RESIN Myroxylum balsamum v. pereirae
A dark, pourable tree resin from El Salvador. The common name comes form
the 17th century when the resin was sent to Peru for export to Europe.
Trees must be 20 years old before they can be tapped for the resin. It
has a rich, earthy, vanilla-like fragrance, and makes a enthralling body
scent. Traditionally used for skin disease, wound healing, fungal
infections, coughs and lung ailments, colds, and rheumatism. It has
clearly documented antibacterial, antiseptic and antiparasitical
actions. For internal use, 5 drops twice a day is recommended. We offer
pure tree resin, not a steamed distilled oil.
$10/ 1/2 oz bottle or
$16/1 oz bottle (double liquid volume for shipping)
BETEL
NUTS Areca catechu
This is the
world’s most popular (per capita) stimulant derived from the
graceful Betel nut palm tree. Traditionally blended with a variety
of spices and additives, wrapped in a betel leaf (Piper betle
) and slowly chewed to activate the stimulant alkaloid mix. The
alkaloid arecoline has been clinically shown to improve serial
learning and memory. Very popular in India, Indonesia, Thailand and
other far eastern cultures. Chewed by millions daily, before
breakfast, after lunch, at bedtime and every hour between. Virtually
unknown in the west, but used by more humans than coffee or tobacco!
The base of Betel nuts, Betel leaf, Acacia resin and lime is
elaborated in hundreds of ways using cardamom, cloves, tamarind,
dates, fennel, honey, turmeric, other flavors and psychoactive
herbs, each region having its own unique blends. Betel is valued
throughout Asia as a highly effective antiparasite herb. Soaked in
vodka, the nuts make a potent dark red tincture. In Asia life-long
chewing of Betel nuts is linked with mouth cancer, though it’s not
clear if this is due to the nuts themselves or the popular habit of
chewing them with tobacco. Interestingly, the Betel leaf has been
shown to suppress tumor growth. We offer thinly sliced nuts. Sliced Asian Betel nuts $13/8 oz or $20/lb
BILBERRY Vaccinium myrtillus
Small dark purple berries from a European shrub similar to the
blueberry. Utilized since at least the middle ages as a food and
medicine to improve vision. These mildly sweet, slightly
astringent berries are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants—especially
bioflavonoids. The most important of the flavonoids appears to be
the anthocyanosides, which extensive scientific research shows to
enhance circulation by increasing blood flow, strengthening
existing capillaries and stimulating new capillary formation. This
action seems to be most concentrated in and around the eyes,
making Bilberry the favored herb for all forms of macular
degeneration. During World War II British Royal Air Force pilots
ate Bilberry jam to improve visual acuity and clinical studies
suggest that regular consumption improves night vision. Computer
users report that it can significantly help to prevent and relieve
eye fatigue. Bilberry’s effects on circulation also help to
protect against artherosclerosis. Research has shown that Bilberry
tonifies the urinary system and kidneys, balances blood sugar, is
antiviral and antibacterial, antiulcer and antiinflammatory.
Mixing with Ginkgo leaf has a synergistic beneficial effect on
circulation. Bilberry can be made into delicious jams and wines. A
traditional Elizabethan remedy for stomach complaints was made
with ground berries and honey. Adds a nice flavor and beautiful
purple color when added to teas. We enjoy rehydrating the berries
by soaking them in water overnight, then adding them to smoothies
or cereal. 10–20 grams three times a day is recommended.
Organically grown, whole, Bulgarian Bilberry
fruti $20/8
oz or
$35/lb CACAO SEED
POWDER Theobroma cacao "Cocoa"
Native to Central American rainforests, this tree was originally cultivated
by the Olmecs, then the Maya, Toltecs and finally taken up by the
Aztecs. The seeds were actually used as a form of currency in Aztec
society. The Aztecs were very thorough in their quest to understand
the properties of all plants in their realm, having an entire class of
trained medicinal scientists exploring far and wide to bring back
living specimens to the royal botanical gardens for research. With
such expertise and so many intriguing botanical products available, it
is fitting that they determined the seeds of the Cacao tree to be of
such superior value. There were periods when no person in the whole
domain was allowed to use the seeds, except the King and his inner
circle. In fact, the botanical name for this tree, Theobroma cacao,
translates as "food of the gods."
To prepare the seeds, the pods are first piled up to "sweat" or
ferment for 3-4 days, then the seeds are removed and dried. For home
use locally, they are simply roasted and ground into a paste which is
frequently brewed with hot peppers, aromatic medicinal herbs, cornmeal
and mucilaginous flowers of the psychoactive Flor Rosita tree.
When it became necessary to store the powdered product for shipping
and commerce, a process for defatting the rich cocoa butter was
devised to prevent the oils from going rancid with time. It is these
defatted roasted seeds which are ground to make this exquisite plant
ally we know as "cocoa." Few non-native people are acquainted
with the pure form of "cocoa" and its effects because of the abundance
of manufactured chocolate/sugar products today.
To learn the spirit of this sacred food-drug one should experience it
free from the dramatically altering effects of sugar and other
additives. Brew a strong infusion of this seed powder by taking two
tablespoons and working it into one cup of cold water. Start this
heating slowly and gently, gradually bringing it to the verge of
boiling. Take the heat back down immediately to a simmer without
actually boiling. Let simmer for three minutes. Drink hot, but keep it
well stirred so as not to have the suspended material settle.
Cacao's euphoric
aphrodisiacal qualities are attributed to theobromine with a small ratio of
caffeine, phenethylamine, isoquinoline, and anandamide which has been found to bind
to the same receptors in the brain as THC. Cacao also
contains significant amounts of two compounds that inhibit the
degradation of anandamide in the body. The effects come on rapidly.
Contrary to assumptions, the action of theobromine is truly relaxant,
particularly for smooth muscle groups. The experience has elements of
cerebral excitement but the sensation is overwhelmingly somatic. The
heartbeat becomes pronounced, breathing is deepened and nourishing
blood circulation is increased throughout the body. Tactile sensation
is raised to a level of bodily ecstasy. A calm, warm glow of being
incarnate, a gentle power courses through the limbs, that perfect
feeling of fulfillment and pleasure, like curling up on a soft rug
with a friend in front of a winter fireplace.
Pure Cacao seed powder has recently been found to contain high levels
of antioxidant polyphenols, oligomeric procynanidins and other
flavonoids that help boost the immune system and offer significant
protection against "bad" cholesterol and heart disease. It
is also very nutritious, having a high protein, vitamin and mineral
content.
Our organically grown, fair trade certified Cacao comes from a small
independently owned farms. Expertly roasted,
it is the finest quality in terms of taste, nutrition and medicinal
components that we have come across. It is what we use in
formulating our popular aphrodisiacal drink blend, Moctezuma's Secret, as well as for personal use in making
chocolate confections at home. It is shade grown, depending on an intact
surrounding forest that also acts as a refuge for the region’s
biodiversity. Your purchase directly helps support a traditionally
sustainable agriculture that aids in the protection and regrowth of
our rapidly disappearing rainforests.
Organically grown, Fair Trade
Certified, roasted Cacao Seed powder $10/8 oz or $16/lb

CACAO
SEEDS, RAW Theobroma cacao "Chocolate Beans"
Many of us have an
intimate relationship with chocolate, but few are familiar with
the raw, unprocessed seed, the original "Food of the
Gods." Once utilized as a form of currency in Aztec society,
raw Cacao seeds are a true superfood, being high in protein,
beneficial fats, vitamins and minerals. Raw Cacao is reported to
be the richest natural source for magnesium, an important
mineral highly deficient in modern diets. The raw seeds are also
surprisingly high in vitamin C and an excellent source of natural sulfur, a mineral associated with healthy
skin, nails, hair and proper liver and pancreas function. Raw
Cacao is the most medicinal of any chocolate product, containing
the highest levels of immune-enhancing antioxidant polyphenols,
procyanidins and other flavonoids known to protect against a
wide array of ailments, especially heart disease. Unfortunately
cooking and processing seriously compromises or destroys many of
these health enhancing constituents in the seeds. The
psychoactive properties of the raw seeds are also very
different, having a more mild "clear" stimulant effect, being
pleasantly relaxing, imparting a sense of well being, along with
a wonderful enhancement of tactile sensation that leaves no
doubt to their aphrodisiacal efficaciousness. These actions are thought
to be at least partially attributable to a much lower caffeine
content and higher theobromine content than the fermented,
roasted, processed and sugared "cocoa" that we are all
use to. The taste of raw Cacao seeds is similar to that of
unsweetened baking chocolate, slightly bitter and deliciously
rich. They can be eaten whole as is. Soaking in water for
several hours softens them nicely, at which point they can be
made into raw "hot" chocolate by adding a handful to a
blender along with your favorite milk (we prefer hemp seed or
macadamia nut milk), a little vanilla, cinnamon and honey to
sweeten and then warming on the stove. This can alternately be
frozen for a special treat. The dry seeds can be ground in a
coffee mill to make raw "cocoa powder." This can be mixed
with 1/5 -1/3 raw Virgin Oil de Coco-Creme oil and honey to taste, then shaped into squares, placed on
waxpaper in the fridge for 10 minutes to solidify, and you have truly
phenomenal raw chocolate bars!
For those who prefer
a more familiar taste, the seeds can be roasted in a pan, then
eaten straight or ground and mixed with honey. These seeds are
Trinitario variety organically grown and dried at very low temperatures in Ecuador. For your convenience we
now offer dehusked Cacao nibs (pieces). These nibs are very
close to what we previously offered as Super Raw Cacao. We enjoy them as a
healthful daily snack. See our Books
page for the book Naked Chocolate, full of lore and exquisite recipes.
Organically grown raw Cacao seed nibs $6/4 oz or $19/lb or $70/4 lbs

seeds are processed at low temperatures producing this fantastic raw
cocoa (and the cocoa butter). Raw Cacao powder is clearly the most
medicinal chocolate product available. Analysis reveals up to 4 times the antioxidants

powder has some of the highest antioxidant levels found in any
nutriceutical or food. Excellent rich taste and delectable stimulant
effects similar to the raw nibs. Use in the place of roasted cocoa
powder in any recipes or concoctions. It takes nearly 3 lbs of seeds to
make one pound of powder. 1/2-2 tablespoons a day is the recommended
dose.

unpleasant scent, this butter has a wonderful delicate chocolate aroma
and smooth rich flavor. Raw Cacao butter contains beneficial polyphenols
and saturated fats that may have a positive effect on cholesterol.
Considered by many to be the ultimate skin moisturizer. Soothing and
helpful for a variety of skin conditions. Cacao butter is a solid that
softens and melts at body temperature. It can be used in a wide spectrum
of lotions and ointments and is superb for making all sorts of creamy
chocolate confections. It takes nearly 3 lbs of Cacao seeds to
make one pound of butter.

CAIGUA
Cyclanthera pedata
This Peruvian wild cucumber
has long been utilized for weight loss and problems associated
with arteriosclerosis. It is thought to be one of the most
potent natural fat absorbers and is traditionally taken together
with Hercampuri to rejuvenate and reduce cellulite. Clinical
studies have demonstrated regular consumption of Caigua
regulates the metabolism of lipids and sugar in the blood
stream, controlling cholesterol levels by reducing LDL
cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) while increasing
HDL cholesterol (the "good" type). Flavonoids and
triterpenoid saponins have been isolated from the Caigua fruit.
A preclinical study has also shown Caigua to be a more potent
antiinflammatory than ibuprofin. Caigua’s weight reducing and
cholesterol-balancing effects are most noted when consumed daily
for several weeks or months. 2–4 teaspoons is the recommended
dosage. Pleasant tasting, it mixes well with foods or can be
dissolved in liquids or taken in capsules. Our Caigua is the
finest available, organically grown and spray dried into a potent powder.

CALAMUS ROOT Acorus calamus
Chopped rhizomes of this
intense, aromatic herb, rich in essential oils. Highly valued by
many Native American tribes as a stimulant and carminative. Many
interesting uses. In India, the wandering sadhus add a bit of
this root into their chillum smoking herb for a mellowing
effect. Said to help break nicotine addictions. Also makes a
refreshing additive to a hot bath or used in steam water for the
sauna or sweat lodge.
Organically
grown, cut and sifted American Calamus root $11/8 oz
CALEA
ZACATECHICHI: the Dream Herb
The Chontal people of Oaxaca know the endemic Calea zacatechichi
herb to be useful as a divinatory medicine. They claim that an extremely
bitter tea made from the plant induces a state of sleep during which
very brief, intense dream sequences reveal the answers village problems
and personal difficulties. Strangely, an extract of Calea
zacatechichi was studied in a fully controlled clinical setting by
authoritative scientists to determine its pharmacological effects. The
result of this objective research revealed that the plant indeed
produces a state of drowsiness, followed by peculiarly intense but short
episodes of cat naps in which a set of dream sequences were invariably
reported by the subjects, who stated them to be unusually lucid and
profound of meaning. In this careful clinical study, control groups
receiving placebos, had no such experiences. We sought this obscure herb
for years, finally encountering it in the mountains of southern Mexico,
in order to offer to interested researchers. Supplies are scarce, but we
currently have a good stock. The bitter tea is made by steeping about 1
tablespoon herb for 10–15 minutes. It is also utilized in
smoking blends. For more info on this plant and other dream
herbs, see the Book
Drugs of the
Dreaming.
Wildcrafted Calea
herb $14/1 oz or $40/4 oz or $65/8 oz
CALIFORNIA POPPY HERB Eschscholzia californica

spirit. It is reported to ease tobacco and alcohol withdrawal. We
enjoy it as an evening tea mixed with
mint and honey.
Organic-biodynamically grown, cut and sifted California Poppy

CAMU
CAMU BERRIES Myciaria dubia
These berries, from a bush that grows in
swampy and flooded areas of the Amazon, are the highest natural source of
vitamin C! Very rich in iron, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin,
beta carotene, minerals and amino acids including serine, valine, and
leucine. The terpenes alpha-pinene and d-limonene are also found in these
impressively nutritious fruits. Studies show Camu Camu to have strong
antioxidant effects. Utilized here in North America to alleviate
depression and wean people off pharmaceutical antidepressants. Because of its antioxidant,
emollient and slightly astringent properties it’s becoming popular in
cosmetic products, especially shampoos and conditioners. It is said to
revitalize and strengthen hair. The sour berry powder can be mixed with
water or juice, it is even made into an ice cream in Peru! Recommended
usage is 1/2 teaspoon 2 to 4 times a day. We enjoy it mixed with fresh
lemon juice, water and a little honey. Our Camu Camu is ecologically
wildcrafted in the Peruvian Amazon where it is pulped, frozen, then
shipped to Lima, macerated and dehydrated. This process preserves the
phytonutrient content of the berries producing by far the finest product
available, with a vitamin C content of 13–16%! Please note that most of
the Camu Camu available is cut with maltodextrin and is a light colored
powder with a sour taste, ours is not cut with anything, is dark in color
and has a strong sour-bitter flavor because of the extremely high vitamin
C content.
Wildcrafted
Peruvian Camu Camu berry powder $18/100 grams or $64/lb
CANCHALAGUA
Schkuhria pinnata
Canchalagua is a small,
herbaceous plant, that grows in mountainous regions of South America. It is

CATUABA
Erythroxylum catuaba
NEW!!
The bark of
this wild relative of the Coca plant (Erythroxylum coca )
is known amongst some Amazonian herbalists as the supreme
aphrodisiac for men and women, and has been highly regarded for
many generations. It is a mild CNS stimulant that is used to
balance and tonify the nervous system. It is used in folk
remedies to increase libido, for impotence, as a cardiotonic, to
sharpen memory, and for all manner of nervous conditions
including anxiety, insomnia, exhaustion and nerve pain. Clinical
studies have revealed Catuaba’s antibacterial and antiviral
properties, showing it to be effective against E. coli
and most significantly to inhibit the absorption HIV into cells.
Unlike its sister, Catuaba does not contain cocaine, but a host
of interesting alkaloids, sterols, terpenes, lignans, and
flavonoids. Catuaba is often taken alone or with Muira Puama,
traditionally infused overnight in cold water, steeped as a tea
or decocted for greater potency, 1/2–1 Tablespoon per dose.
Its mild bitter flavor also makes an excellent cordial and holds
potential as an herbal beer. It can be taken daily for its tonic
action, the only known side effects being erotic dreams and
feelings! We find it produces a gentle stimulation with a
magnification of consciousness and tactile awareness, especially
for men. We’ve had very positive reports of
blending Catuaba with Mulungu. Confusion exists regarding the actual species of plant
known as Catuaba, with at least 4 unrelated botanicals being
marketed as such. We offer what is considered the true Catuaba,
sustainably harvested in Brazil.

CHAMAIRO Mussatia
hyacinthina
NEW!!
The bark of this rare vine is highly valued in tropical regions
of Bolivia and Peru as an admixture to Coca leaf. Chewed on its
own, a small pinch of Chamairo has a mild astringent taste, yet
when mixed with a traditional Coca quid it blossoms with an
exceptional sweet taste, somewhat like powdered sugar! It is
thought to enhance the actions of Coca and is reportedly
sometimes chewed with alkali (baking soda works), but without
the Coca, for its own effects. It is also a traditional
digestive tonic. Chamairo’s capacity for potentiating other
bioactive herbs (we've heard positive effects with Catuaba) and its promise as a condiment is still
unexplored. We have secured a small supply of finely shredded vine
bark, wildcrafted by the Tacana in north west Bolivia and are
pleased to offer it here for the first time. Limited supply.

CHANCA
PIEDRA Phyllanthus niruri
This small annual herb, native to the
Amazon and other tropical regions, is a highly beneficial plant that’s
gaining worldwide attention as an important and safe medicinal. Long
employed by indigenous healers for its cleansing and tonifying action on the
liver, kidney and gallbladder, as a painkiller and to treat a wide array of
ailments including digestive disturbances, malaria, diabetes, parasites,
colds and flus. The name Chanca Piedra literally means "stone
breaker" referring to its effectiveness in expelling kidney, bladder
and gallstones. Nicole Maxwell, author of the classic Witch Doctor’s
Apprentice, recognized Chanca Piedra as one of the most important
medicines of the Amazon. Over the years hundreds of clinical studies confirm
its ability to prevent and expel kidney and gallstones, offer cellular
protection to toxins, heal the liver, lower blood pressure and help with
diabetes. German case studies show 94% success with completely eliminating
stones and restoring proper kidney and gallbladder function in just one to
two weeks. It is an antispasmodic and pain reliever reported to be seven
times more potent than aspirin or acetaminophen. It has strong antibacterial
and antiviral action, showing promise with hepatitis B virus and HIV.
All of these properties are attributed to a wide spectrum of unique
phytochemicals including alkaloids, lignans, glycosides, flavonoids,
ellagitannins and phenylpropanoids. Everyone, even those in good health,
will benefit from using this herb periodically throughout the year to
cleanse the body and maintain optimal wellness. 1–2 teaspoons steeped as
pleasant tasting tea and drunk daily.

CHIA SEED Salvia
hispanica
The tiny seed of the Chia plant was once a staple food and
medicine throughout Central America. Traditionally the seeds
were mixed with water to treat constipation, sore throat,
irritated skin, digestive disturbance, prostate problems, to
cleanse the eyes and increase the efficacy of other medicines.
The seeds are a good source of B vitamins, calcium (100 grams of
seeds contains roughly 5x that of milk!), phosphorus, zinc,
boron (an essential trace mineral deficient in modern diets) and
copper. Chia has excellent protein, containing around 20% with
all essential amino acids. A top source for omega3 essential
fatty acids and contains several antioxidants, making it a more
stable source for EFA’s than flax or hemp seed. Easily
digestible, Chia is rich in mucilloid soluble fiber. When mixed
with water or stomach juices, a gel forms that creates a barrier
between the carbohydrates and digestive enzymes, therefore
digestion is slow and uniform, without spikes in blood sugar
levels, providing abundant energy and allaying hunger. Thus Chia
is useful for athletics, diabetes and weight loss. Mix one part
seed to ten parts water and stir thoroughly for several minutes.
This forms a highly versatile gel that can be drunk as is, mixed
with fruit juices for "Chia fresca" or used as a
thickening agent in recipes. The seeds can also be added to
cereals, breads, crackers, smoothies, etc. We have a new book on
the history and uses Chia available in our Books
section.

CHLORELLA Chlorella pyrenoidosa
Chlorella is an amazing
single cell freshwater green MICROALGAE
that is the superfood of choice for over 10 million people
worldwide. The first known form of plant life with a true
nucleus, it has survived for 2.5 billion years because of its
extremely tough outer cell wall and its ability to quadruple in
quantity every 20 hours, making it the fastest growing plant on
earth! The most extensive scientifically researched foodstuff
and #1 supplement in Japan. NASA believes it to be the ideal
food for long term space travel and colonization. Chlorella is
said to be the most powerful yet gentle detoxifying whole food
known.
Chlorella contains an impressive 60+% bioavailable protein;
providing 19 amino acids including all essential aminos in
excellent proportions. It is high in enzymes, vitamins A, B1,
B2, B3, B5(niacin), B6, B12, C, E, K, an array of carotenes,
folic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, phosphorus,
iodine and exceptionally high in iron. Richest of all the edible
algaes in essential fatty acids. It has the highest levels of
chlorophyll of any natural source, up to 5 to 10 times that of
Spirulina! Chlorophyll kills harmful bacteria, is nearly
identical to hemoglobin in blood and is a remarkable agent for
blood building, cleansing and tissue repair. Chlorella is by far
the richest source for RNA/DNA, which when taken in foods
provides material for cellular repair and revitalization,
contributing to rapid healing, greater energy and longer life
span. The nucleus of the chlorella cell contains a unique
nucleotide-peptide complex known as Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF)
which actually promotes cell growth in the body, stimulating
tissue repair and healing to an extent not previously found in
any other food, it even increases growth rates in children!
Chlorella produces an incredible enhancement of metabolic
function, rebuilds and fortifies the immune system, slows aging,
greatly improves digestion and stimulates the growth of
beneficial bacteria in the bowels. It is highly effective
helping the body to breakdown and detoxify a wide variety of
environmental toxins. In fact, Chlorella’s outer cell wall has
the unique ability to bind with heavy metals and persistent
toxicants like DDT and PCBs and carry them safely out of the
body. The cell wall also contains a substructure of complex
polysaccharides that stimulate interferon production to fight
off viruses and other foreign agents. Clinical research has
shown chlorella to aid in protecting against and healing an
amazingly wide spectrum of maladies including: colds and flus,
liver disease, high cholesterol, tumors/cancers, ulcers,
Alzheimers, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, candida overgrowth,
loss of vision, even radiation sickness.
A starting dose is about 1 teaspoon a day, working up to 4 or
more over several weeks. More should be taken when illness is
present, as a safeguard when traveling and during the cold and
flu season. Chlorella has a much milder taste compared to other
algaes like Spirulina and is excellent mixed into juice,
smoothies, sauces, soups and other foods. Blending with equal
parts honey is a real treat, kids love it! Chlorella is known to
increase the growth of lactobacillus acidophilus and enhances
the preparation of fermented foods and drinks such as
sauerkraut, yogurt and kefir. The most pronounced effects are
usually experienced after consuming Chlorella daily for 2-3
months; increased energy accompanied by mental
clarity and a remarkable feeling of well being. Great for
everyone, healthy or ill, children, elders, even pets!
Chlorella’s tough outer wall of cellulose is largely
indigestible, but the Japanese have come up with several methods
to overcome this problem. Our Chlorella is exposed to supersonic
sound, which vibrates the cells together weakening the cell
walls and causing small ruptures. The chlorella is then spray
dried, further permeating the cell walls without completely
fracturing them. This process produces a beautiful deep green
powder that is one of the most digestible products while
preserving the high nutrient content that is partially destroyed
by other production methods. The protein content of our
Chlorella is typically 65% while Chlorella produced by the
patented dyno-mill method is closer to 50%.
Our Chlorella is naturally cultivated in sun exposed
ponds in Japan. Sun exposure assures the highest levels of
chlorophyll, CGF and other phytonutrients. Growth, harvest and
processing is closely monitored, our Chlorella powder tests
negative for all pollutants and microbes.
Chlorella keeps well. For optimum nutrient preservation we
suggest storing in an air tight glass container under
refrigeration. One pound fits into a one quart mason jar.

(cracked) cell wall Chlorella powder $16/8 oz or $26/lb
CHUCHUHUASI Maytenus macrocarpa
The bark of this
medicinal rainforest tree is also known as Chuchuhuasa (not to
be confused with Heisteria pallida, Cheiloclinum
cognatum and several others with this common name). One of
the foremost herbal medicines in Amazonia, used as a general
cleansing immuno-fortifier for thousands of years. Traditional
healers have shown how they use the bark for colds, flu,
infections, migraine, adrenal support, respiratory problems,
rheumatism, menstrual regulation and many common illnesses. It
is valued as a pain reliever and muscle relaxant. As a
"teacher plant" during dietas it is said to
fortify the body and teach one resistance and endurance in every
sense. Famous as an aphrodisiac. Italian phytochemical trails
clinically proved it is a highly effective antiinflammatory, has
very high antitumor activity (especially skin tumors) and is an
antioxidant radioprotective agent. Sesquiterpenic and spermidine
alkaloids, catechins, cumarins, saponins and triterpenes are
present. Chuchuhuasi synergizes well with other herbs; one great
aphrodisiacal blend is Chuchuhuasi, Clavohuasca, Iporuru and
Cacao. Traditionally soaked in alcohol or infused into a
full-bodied deep red tea that is pleasantly energizing. 1
teaspoon per cup of tea, best with a little honey. 1/2 teaspoon
powder can also be taken with juice or water.

CLAVOHUASCA
Tynanthus panurensis "Clove Vine"
This exotic aphrodisiac is a
highly regarded, and until recently, well kept secret amongst folks in the
Amazon. This rare vine is in the same family as the "mother of all
medicines", ayahuasca. It bears the enchanting aroma and flavor of
cloves. Clavohuasca is often mentioned primarily as a woman’s
aphrodisiac, but in fact both men and women greatly enjoy its effects on
sexual potency and it is widely used in Peru and Brazil to treat frigidity
and to support healthy erections. The vine has analgesic properties and is
traditionally utilized to treat rheumatic pains. It is also an excellent
digestive aid and it is sometimes an admixture to ayahuasca brews to help
mitigate the purgative effects. We have also heard reports of its
utilization treating thyroid imbalances. Very little research has been done on its
constituents, an alkaloid has been reported and the substance eugenol is
responsible for the clove-like aroma, it may contain other intriguing
unexplored compounds. The most common aphrodisiacal preparation in South
America is made by macerating the vine bark in cane alcohol. Many also
find it to make an enticing cordial after soaking in brandy for several
weeks. It can be made into tea, about 1–2 teaspoons per cup, or mixed
with hot chocolate. Our Clavohuasca is sustainably wildcrafted in
northeastern Peru.

COCONUT
OIL, RAW Cocos nucifera "Virgin Oil de Coco-Creme"
Coconut oil or coconut butter (as
it’s known below 78° F in its solid state) has been employed as a
medicine and food since antiquity. Widely used in Ayurvedic concoctions,
it is considered the most cooling of all therapeutic oils. Unlike the
deleterious cholesterol-rich saturated fats found in dairy products and
meat, raw coconut oil is a cholesterol-free beneficent saturated fat
comprised of mostly medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) which are digested
and metabolized easily, being converted directly into energy rather than
being stored as fat. Raw coconut oil has less calories than any other fat.
The MCFAs in raw coconut oil are capric acid, caprylic acid, lauric acid
and myristic acid. which display potent antibacterial, antifungal,
antiviral and antiprotozoal properties. Laboratory tests have shown these
MCFAs to be useful for flu, herpes, ulcers, hepatitis C, AIDS, pneumonia,
candida, fungal skin infections, and parasites. Raw coconut oil is
antioxidant and helps stimulates proper thyroid function, aiding weight
loss and assisting to lower cholesterol by converting it to pregnenolone,
which is restorative to the body/mind and helps balance hormone levels.
Consuming raw coconut oil regularly may also balance blood sugar. Taken
internally and applied topically it is highly nourishing, regenerative and
moisturizing to the skin. Widely used in the Tropics to protect skin and
hair from the sun. It makes an exceptional massage and body oil. With its
sensuous silky feel, delicious aroma and taste, we consider it the supreme
erotic oil. Because coconut oil is one of the most naturally stable oils
and unlike other oils does not form carcinogenic trans-fatty acids during
heating, it is the ideal oil for cooking and imparts a wonderful flavor.
Raw coconut oil can be used in place of butter/oils in any recipe. It can
also be eaten straight and is a great creamy addition to smoothies. 1–2
tablespoons a day recommended, more for therapeutic doses. It blends
fabulously with Cacao and is indispensable for making raw chocolate bars.
Our pure raw coconut oil is the very finest, a one of a kind oil, known as
Virgin Oil de Coco-Creme. In our experience, it has the highest
therapeutic value of any coconut oil, superior to other raw virgin oils on
the market. When solid it melts easily to touch and is crystal clear when
liquid. Extracted from fresh organic Indonesian coconut milk using cold
pressing and centrifugation. Unlike other coconut oils there is no
chemicals, heating, drying, or fermentation at any stage of the processes.
A pure but unrefined "pharmaceutical" grade, sweet smelling and
tasting, light raw oil with a shelf life of at least 3 years.

COPAIBA RESIN Copaifera
officinalis
An earthy sweet smelling oleoresin
that is widely used as a fragrance in cosmetic products. This thin golden oil is
a sustainable rainforest product, Copaiba trees are tapped similar to harvesting
maple syrup, a single tree providing around 10 gallons of resin annually. This
ancient jungle medicine has long been utilized in western herbalism, its
properties were first introduced to Europe by the Jesuits in the early 1600s.
Clinical research verifies its traditional use as an antiinflammatory,
analgesic, antiseptic wound healer, antibacterial/ antifungal agent, and for
ulcers, respiratory afflictions, and urinary infection. Recent studies have
focused on promising anticancer and antitumor actions when used internally or
externally. Rich in sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, and terpenic acids. A few drops
of resin in water or honey is excellent for sore throats. Soothing to insect
bites and reported to be very effective for nail fungus. Considered a mild
stimulant taken internally. Makes an excellent massage oil for inflamed muscles
when diluted 1 to 10 in a carrier oil. For serious skin problems or inflammation
small amounts can be applied undiluted, though some individuals are sensitive
and experience topical irritation. Internally 5-15 drops 2-3 times a day is
recommended. Large amounts are emetic. We offer pure undiluted oleoresin from
Peru.

CORDYCEPS
MUSHROOM Cordyceps sinensis
A rare fungus that parasitizes moth larvae. Greatly revered in Tibet, called
Dong Chong Xia Cao ("winter worm, summer grass"). Himalayan people
compete with yaks to harvest the fungus because they value it as a tonic for
reproductive health and potency. Himalayan sherpas collect Cordyceps just before
the yaks begin their springtime climb high into the steep ravines to eat the
"summer grass" prior to migrating back down the mountain for mating.
One of the most prized herbs in all of Chinese medicine. Modern studies show
Cordyceps to be something of a panacea: strongly antioxidant, antiviral and
bacterial, anticancer, moderates blood pressure and blood sugar, reduces
cholesterol, protects and tonifies the liver, kidney, heart and nervous system.
Clinical studies confirm its ability to improve sexual "performance."
During the 1993 Olympics, the Chinese women’s track team broke the world
record by an astounding time, investigations revealed they were using Cordyceps.
Shows promise in treating depression and has traditional use curing opium
addiction. We find it to be an energizing cognitive stimulant, producing an
altered, enhanced state. We offer dried powdered mycelium organically grown on
brown rice or Purple Corn (not larvae!). 1–2 teaspoons of powder a day
recommended, mixed in food, capsules or tea. For

SHEN ROOT Salvia miltiorrhiza
This Chinese medicinal comes in the
form of long slices of root of an unusual species of Salvia (sage).
Esteemed by the Chinese for thousands of years as an unsurpassed
circulatory stimulant. Extensive research has shown Dan Shen to improve coronary circulation, expanding the arteries and
improving blood flow to the heart. It is also used traditionally to
treat menstrual irregularities and to protect the liver. Recent
pharmacological tests show Dan Shen root to be an excellent
anti-anxiety medicine as well, producing mental calmness and
relaxation, releasing inner stress. The complex chemical compounds
responsible for this beneficial effect have been discovered to act
upon the so-called Valium receptor sites in the brain. Best taken as a
tea, a regular dose of 10 grams decocts into a pleasant tasting red
colored tea.

ELDERBERRIES
Sambucus nigra
The Elder tree was a panacea of the ancients, cultivated since prehistoric
times. A wealth of folklore surrounds this revered European medicinal. In its
branches is said to dwell a wise spirit, the Elder Mother, who watches over the
plant and bestows healing upon those who honor it. The clusters of black purple
berries have long been used for making medicinal wines, an esteemed ale called
ebulon, syrups and jams. Rich in vitamins A and C, immune stimulating flavonoids
and anthocyanin. Elderberry wine is an old fashion cure for colds and rheumatic
pains. Elderberries promote sweating, helping to break fever. Clinical trials
show antibacterial properties and Israeli studies have shown the berries to be
highly effective against flu and other viruses. There are endless ways to
prepare the dried berries; steeped as tea, rehydrated in a little water, ground
with honey, boiled down into a syrup, steeped in vinegar or wine, made into jam,
fermented into a wine or ale, even made into pies and pastries! Recipes for elder ales and wines can be found in Sacred and Healing Herbal

ELEUTHERO ROOT Eleutherococcus senticosus
The roots of this Asian shrub, distantly related to true Ginseng and at one time
known as Siberian Ginseng, are one of the
top adaptogens, in use for over 2000 years. Produces a generalized balancing and
healing effect, increasing endurance from all types of stress, whether it be
physiological, emotional, psychological or environmental. Extensive clinical
studies done in Russia have shown Eleuthero root to enhance mental acuity and
physical endurance, improving the use of oxygen by the exercising muscle.
Lignans, polysaccharides, triterpene saponins, glycosides, coumarins and
phenalacrylic acid derivatives (eleutherosides) are thought responsible for the
root’s powerful immunomodulating properties. Research has shown it to offer
protection against radiation exposure and cancer development. Aids
detoxification, protects against colds and flus. Reduces the harmful effects of
stress by helping the adrenal glands function. Helpful for those recovering from
drug misuse, especially stimulants. In this age of widespread pollution and
fast-paced, high stress living, this herb is a must! Best when taken continually
over a period of time, 2–5 grams (1–2 tablespoons) a day is recommended.
Traditionally 6–8 weeks of usage are followed by a 1–2 week break before
continuing. Large amounts may cause MAO inhibition. Mixes well with many foods
and juice.

GINKGO LEAVES Ginkgo biloba
The oldest still-living tree species on
earth, being essentially unchanged since the dinosaur times 200 million years
ago. A huge tree that can live for thousands of years and survive extreme
conditions. A Gingko tree growing near ground zero survived and resprouted after
the Hiroshima nuclear blast! It is thought that Gingko’s resilience is due to
the unusual compounds it manufactures. Standardized leaf extracts are now the
number one bestselling herbal ingredient in Germany as circulatory and brain
stimulants. This could be the organophile’s smart drug. Contains
free-radical-scavenging compounds, increases blood flow and oxygenates the body.

GOLD ROOT Heliopsis
longipes
Slowly chewing a
matchstick-sized piece of gold root creates an intense tingling sensation in the
lips and mouth, subsiding in a few minutes. These roots are harvested from wild
plants in the high forests of tropical southern Mexico. Local herbalists use it
for toothache (claimed to halt the pain almost immediately) and it is also used
for oral cleansing, to clean and whiten the teeth. Rich in immune-boosting
alkamides, some of the active constituents in Echinacea. Experiments with the pleasant but dramatic skin tingling led us to
use it erotically, as the sensation can be shared from mouth to other skin
areas... (A Swedish magazine, Aftonbladet, with 2 million
circulation, surveyed aphrodisiac herbs and gave our gold root first prize in
the oral sex test.) Always in high demand, supplies of this hard to find herb
are sporadic. We once again have a limited amount on hand.

GREEN TEA Camelia
sinensis = Thea sinensis
The Holy Sacrament of Zen
has an ancient and noble history as a drug plant ally in the Far East. The
scientific name, Thea (=goddess) underscores the revered status of the
beautiful plant from whose leaves tea is made. From emperor to peasant, mongol
to priest, the brew has been the stimulant of choice for countless millions
across eons of time. It has captivated the souls of humans and has been
worshipped, or perhaps more accurately has been a aid for worshipping, with
Teaism being perhaps one of the world’s largest cults. There are many forms of
tea and as many methods in preparing it.
Most tea products and
blends are from fermented leaves which are virtually composted in great heaps
before being slowly roasted. These are the common black teas. We find the
stimulant alkaloids and fragrant volatile oils are seriously degraded by this
fermenting process. Green Tea is an unfermented leaf product with quite distinct
properties and flavor. It is made from only the finest grade of fresh leaves,
briefly steamed and/or dried rapidly in copper pans over low heat to arrest
enzymatic activity and thus preserve taste and nutrients. The leaves are rolled
in the palm of the hand as they dry, to break up internal cell walls and crumble
them in a uniform cut. This product contains up to 4.5% caffeine (theine) and
theophylline with small amounts of theobromine and xanthine as well as 15%
gallotannic acid and 0.75% of a yellow volatile oil responsible for the
inscrutably delightful odor and taste.
To prepare unfermented Green Tea into one of the finest brews, we recommend
following a very specific recipe. Take pure cold water and bring it just under a
boil. In a second pan place one teaspoon of Green Tea per cup or two being
served. Remove the water from the heat and let it cool just a bit. Pour the
desired amount of this water over the leaves, but be ready to act quickly. Let
this steep for about a minute or so then strain off into cups or a preheated
teapot. This prevents cooking the leaves and allows the readily soluble
xanthines and oils to infuse without destroying their subtle flavors while
avoiding the release of the undesirable tannic acid irritants. Moderate
consumption is felt as an invigorating mental tonic. It refreshes a tired
spirit, speeding up thought processes and opening the higher intellectual
centers. We experience this as a psychic opening of the upper forehead. Beware
of drinking too many cups: you may find yourself pacing wildly in circles.
Green Tea is an excellent source of immune building polyphenols and other
antioxidants. Believed to offer protection against heart disease, cancer, tooth decay,
aids digestion and boosts longevity when consumed regularly. Rich in vitamins
and minerals. Other than certain mushrooms, Green Tea is the only source of the
amino acid L-theanine, said to counter many of the negative effects of caffeine
by stimulating alpha brainwaves which promote a state of relaxed awareness.
We offer five distinct
varieties for those just getting to know Green Tea as well as discerning connoisseurs-
Organically grown Bancha Green
Tea- Less caffeine than other Green Teas. Japanese steamed,
untoasted, mature leaf produced late in the harvest season. Nice aroma, light flavor with a sweet aftertaste.

GUARANA Paullinia
cupana var. sorbilis
Famed tonic/stimulant of the Brazilian Amazon. Natives insist their daily dose
of Guarana serves as far more than a powerful stimulant, claiming it acts as
both an aphrodisiac as well as a treatment for headache, fever and cramps. The
high content of tetra-methyl-xanthine, hypoxanthine, guaranine, theophylline and
theobromine accounts for its intensely pleasurable stimulant effects, which
propel the mind and body for up to six hours. Prescribed as a replacement drug
for those who cannot tolerate coffee and tea, but its unusual saponin content (limbonine)
underlies the longterm tonic effect (Ginseng owes its activity to saponins).
Known as a healthy stimulant and perfect sustaining food substitute during fasts
and diets, it’s also fun! About 1/2 to 1 tablespoon is a dose. We now offer
whole seeds so you can grind your own powder fresh in a coffee mill. One of the
crops of Amazonia with positive ecological status: supports the peoples and
habitats of the Amazon. For a more

GUAYUSA Ilex
guayusa Back in Stock!!
Guayusa is a tree native to the
eastern montana of Columbia, Ecuador and Peru and closely related to Yerba Mate.
Guayusa leaves contain a significant amount of caffeine and have been used for
their healthy stimulating properties for thousands of years. While Yerba Mate
has enjoyed ever increasing popularity, Guayusa has remained shrouded in
mystery. In Ecuadorian Amazonia, Guayusa tea is drunk as a general tonic, a
treatment for headaches, stomach problems and for ritual purification. It is
considered a productive aphrodisiac. Taken with ayahuasca it is said to
"kill the bitter taste", "to prevent hangover" and to
"give strength to deal with ayahuasca." The tea is also drunk
shamanically to enhance dreaming, and is reported by some to consistently
produce lucid dreams. Leaves of a Shuar Indian strain of Guayusa were found to
contain 7.6% caffeine, making it the most potent caffeine plant known. However,
on average, most leaves, including those we offer, contain 1–2% or less.
Guayusa brews a very tasty tea, somewhat reminiscent of Green Tea but with a
sweet aftertaste. It has a very low tannin content and therefore can be steeped
for a long time to bring out the full flavor of the leaves. Use about 1–2
teaspoons per cup, less for the powdered leaf. It is commonly brewed with ginger. The tea produces a
pleasant state of enhanced sensory awareness without any jittery or edgy
effects. In fact, in Ecuador it is said to be "good to calm nerves"
and "good for women who are pregnant." Very little modern research has
been done with this amazing plant, in addition to the caffeine, triterpenes and
chlorogenic acid derivatives have been found. We feel confident that future
studies will reveal more immunomodulating and antioxidant phytochemicals like
those found in Yerba Mate and Green Tea, and that Guayusa’s relative obscurity
will be remedied as this beneficial stimulant becomes more widely available. We
are pleased to offer premium grade leaf
from Ecuador, traditionally cultivated without any chemicals.

HE-SHOU-WU (FO-TI) ROOT Polygonum multiflorum
A Chinese medicinal that is a highly regarded longevity herb and sexual tonic,
considered more restorative than Ginseng. Said to improve memory, calm anxiety,
help insomnia, male impotence and even restore grey hair to its color when taken
over time. Strengthens the liver and kidneys, used for malaria, diabetes and as
a fertility tonic for women. The tuberous roots contain
2,3,5,4-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-0-b-D glucoside, and in order to remember that
name, regular use is suggested. Very rare traditionally prepared roots, steamed
in black bean juice to enhance yin energy. 6–8 grams decocted is a regular

HIMEMATSUTAKE
MUSHROOM Agaricus brasiliensis
Agaricus brasiliensis comes from
an area near Sao Paulo, Brazil. Extensive experiments by researchers at the
National Cancer Institute and in Tokyo demonstrated this mushroom to be very
promising as an immunostimulant. It contains high levels of a unique beta
glucan polysaccharide, evidently the compound responsible for the rapid
anticancer and antiviral activity found in their tests. In addition to this
anticancer effect through induction of cytokines, Himematsutake is shown to
reduce blood pressure, modulate blood sugar, lower cholesterol and aid in
reversing the effects of arteriosclerosis. 1–3 teaspoons (2–6 grams) of
powder a day. For more info see - Medicinal

HONEYBUSH TEA Cyclopia
intermedia/subternata
A highly esteemed drink of the Khoi and
San people. Endemic to the Cape fynbos region of South Africa. Made from the
leaves, twigs and blossoms of many species of small leguminous Cyclopia shrubs
and named for their sweetly fragrant yellow flowers. The tea is produced in much
the same way as Rooibos, though the "fermentation" process is
sometimes longer to achieve its rich brown color and sweet smell. Dr. H. De
Lange of the National Institute at Kirstenbosch sees Honeybush as "an
evolutionary drink like wine, because there are so many plant varieties and
possibilities of creating a range of teas, each with its own distinct
flavor."
Honeybush contains trace amounts of caffeine (0.01% compared to 3% or more in
black tea), yet is calming in its effects. Low in tannins, high in vitamin C,
very rich in calcium, potassium and other minerals. Contains anti-diabetic
pinitol and antioxidant isoflavones, coumestans and xanthones. Research on
Honeybush is not as extensive as Rooibos, but it is showing to have a wide
variety of benefits -- antiinflammatory, anticarcinogenic, antimicrobial and
antifungal. Becoming a popular for menopause, helping to alleviate hot
flashes. Tones the urinary system, aids digestion and
is good for psoriasis and other skin disorders. It is even said to stimulate
milk flow in lactating mothers.
Similar in taste to Rooibos, this delectable tea brews an apricot to deep pink
color with a mild sweet taste, floral and smooth, with a hint of spicy
undertones. Unlike many teas, prolonged boiling at low temperatures actually
enhances the flavor. 2-3 teaspoons per cup of tea should be infused for a
minimum of 10 minutes. Like Rooibos, the same batch of tea can be steeped
several times. Fantastic hot, cold, sweetened or unsweetened. Terrific when
blended 50/50 with Rooibos.
The Honeybush industry is still in its infancy and much of it is harvested from
the wild. Our premium grade, certified organic tea comes from Cyclopia
intermedia and Cyclopia subternata grown on locally run cooperative
farms in South Africa, so wild populations are not impacted.

IPORURU
Alchornea castaneifolia
Iporuru, or Hiporuru, is a shrubby Amazonian tree and important
medicinal. Used in Peruvian dietas as a "teacher
plant" and occasionally added to ayahuasca brews. Well known in
Peru for its antiinflammatory and antiarthritic action and being
utilized in North America by athletes, yogis and herbalists for its
ability to support muscle and joint structure, aiding flexibility of
movement and range of motion. An effective topical pain reliever when
rubbed into injuries. In parts of Peru it is hailed as a useful
aphrodisiac, increasing female fertility and a remedying male
impotency. Other folk uses include treating colds, coughs, diarrhea
and diabetes. Taken regularly it produces an interesting state of
heightened awareness. Laboratory research has shown Iporuru to have
antitumor, antifungal and antiviral actions. Analysis shows saponins,
phenols, steroids, flavonols, flavones, tannins, xanthones and
alkaloids including alchorneine also found in Alan (Alchornea
floribunda) of western Africa, see Recording
#124. 1–2 grams (about 1/2 teaspoon) is taken 2–3 times a day. Iporuru
can only be harvested in the Amazon’s dry season, since it spends
most of the rainy season underwater. For most uses 1-2 grams (about
1/2 teaspoon) is taken 2-3 times a day brewed as a tea, or taken in
capsules..

KOLA NUT
POWDER Cola nitida = Cola acuminata
Indigenous to coastal rainforests of West and Central Africa, the seeds of this
beautiful tree have been prized for their powerful stimulant effect. A member of
the same family as Cacao, the Sterculiaceae. The whole seed is carefully peeled
to remove the two large cotyledons within the kernel shell. These are dried to
form the Kola "nuts" which are powdered for use. This powder contains
between 1% and 3.5% caffeine (usually about 2%). Theobromine is also present in
amounts just under one percent. The fresh Kola nuts are particularly enjoyed
where the trees grow, and this preference is known to have solid grounds in
scientific fact: the xanthines (caffeine and theobromine) are bound together
with an unusual compound called kolacatechin, which itself breaks down upon
drying into the tannin Kola Red. The kolacatechin allows the bound chemicals to
be absorbed in a joined fashion, with a unique synergistic action not the same
as when experienced as individual substances in dried Kola powder. For those of
us not so fortunate as to have access to a nearby Kola tree in season, the dried
product must suffice. In fact, the dried Kola nut has been so craved and
appreciated in Africa that extensive intertribal trade networks managed to have
passed it from coast to coast, north to south. In past generations, the Kola nut
was treated as a unit of money.
The reddish-brown powder may be taken in its natural state, either eaten
straight, mixed with honey or packed in capsules. A normal dose is 1-2
teaspoons. Kola is traditionally eaten before a meal to aid digestion and
thought to improve the flavor of anything eaten after it. An interesting drink
may be prepared by stirring the Kola powder into cold water (a tablespoon per
cup) and gradually bringing it to a near boil, reducing the heat to simmer for
five minutes before straining. The drink may be sweetened to taste, but it is
best without cream or other flavorings. It has a unique flavor, not unpleasant.
The many types of soft drinks which use some Kola essence have a hint of this
taste. In fact the original Coca-Cola got its name from Kola nut and coca
leaf once being major herbal ingredients.
The effects usually are first noticed as an increase in depth of breathing
accompanied by spine tingling rushes of energy which begin in the lower back and
swirl up to the base of the head, climaxing with a tightening of the scalp and a
feeling of the hair standing on end. It can range from a quick flash up the
spine to a full-on, one-by-one opening of the chakras as a kundalini-like
mobilization of vital force rises to the crown of the head. Most people notice
this sort of experience, especially those who tend to have body consciousness as
an inclination. Kola usually comes on very smoothly, accelerating somatic and
cerebral energy for about an hour. It is good to use that peak time for enjoying
the ride. Since the skin’s pleasure receptors are especially effected, the
sensation of touch becomes very pleasurable indeed. Delicate stroking or very
light massage can be an enjoyable thing to share with a partner. This is
enhanced by calming the mind and focusing on the surface of the skin while in a
relaxed posture. The combination of an alert, receptive state of mental
stimulation with the sensitization of pleasure in touch make Kola a
delightful experience.

LICORICE
ROOT Glycyrrhiza glabra
Nearly 50 times as sweet as sugar, Licorice root is often thought of as a candy,
it is in fact one of the most valuable, widely prescribed herbs in the world.
Soothing and healing to the whole digestive tract, considered a mild laxative.
Great for sore throats, coughs and other respiratory problems. A powerful tonic
for the endocrine system, rejuvenates exhausted adrenals. One of the active
constituents, glycyrrhizin, has powerful antiinflammatory/antiarthritic action
comparable to hydrocortisone. Glycyrrhizin has also been used to treat chronic
hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. A great addition to any herbal tea blend,
Licorice can also be made into syrups and candies. Because of its sweet taste it’s
one of the easiest herbs to give children. It’s a common flavoring agent added
to tobacco. Some studies done with concentrated licorice extracts have suggested
that it may cause water retention and raise blood pressure levels, yet it must
be remembered that the whole herb has been widely and safely prescribed for
thousands of years without these effects.

LION’S MANE
MUSHROOM Hericium erinaceus
An unusual looking mushroom, forms white balls covered in small tenticle like
growths. Native to stumps and logs of temperate forests throughout the northern
hemisphere. Typically used in Chinese medicine for digestive ailments. Native
Americans used the dried powdered mushroom for wound healing. A seafood like
flavor and texture make it a choice culinary fungus when fresh. The focus of recent
studies, Lion’s Mane contains a number of polysaccharides with antitumor
properties, other compounds and fatty acids that stimulate the immune system. A
group of compounds named erinacines have been discovered that may stimulate the
regrowth of neurons, regenerating nerve tissue in the brain. This makes the
fungus an auspicious candidate for cognitive enhancement and the treatment of
the neurological degeneration associated with Alzheimer’s and senility. 1–3
teaspoons (2–6 grams) a day recommended. For

LUCUMA Pouteria
obovata (=Lucuma obovata)
The fruit of this sacred tree, a sapote
relative, was the most spiritually important fruit of the ancient cultures of
coastal Peru, archaeological evidence dating back 10,000 years. It played a
central role in creation myths, the nutritious breast like fruits being
associated with fertility and nourishment. The fruits superficially resemble a
nippled avocado with yellow-orange pulp "the color of the light stolen from
a thousand sunsets." The pulp has an attractive aroma and a rich
maple-cream flavor. It is high in carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins and minerals,
including significant amounts of beta-carotene, niacin and iron. The dried
powdered fruit is a good addition to herbal blends, mellowing the taste of more
pungent and bitter herbs and is a essential addition to smoothies. It synergizes
incredibly with the flavors of Cacao, Maca and Mesquite. Widely used in the fine
food preparations of Peru, the culinary possibilities are endless. We are
pleased to bring this ancient crop to a wider audience!

LYCII (GOJI) BERRIES Lycium barbarum
"Gou Qi Zi"
Lycii are pink-red berries of a
spiny solanaceous bush native to isolated areas of China and Mongolia.
Also known as Goji berries or wolfberries. A traditional Chinese longevity enhancer, stories dating back nearly 2000 years concern its miraculous ability
to prolong and improve life. One myth says it was a staple food of the great sage and
herbalist, Li Ch’ing Yuen who was claimed to be over 250 years old when he
died in 1930! Lycii berries have been declared a national treasure by the State
Scientific and Technological Commission in China.
Lycii berries are an incredibly nutritionally rich herb/food containing 18 amino
acids, including all the essentials, and up to 21 important trace minerals such
as germanium, zinc, calcium, iron, copper, selenium, etc. Each raisin sized
berry is packed full of beta-carotene and vitamin C. Rich in
vitamins B1, B2, B6 and E. These wonder berries also contain linoleic acid,
sesquiterpenoids, tetraterpenoids, beta-sisterol, betaine and immune
strengthening polysaccharides. One polysaccharide in the berries has been
claimed to induce secretion of rejuvenative growth hormone by the pituitary gland,
giving possible additional credit to Lycii as a revered antiaging herb.
Lycii are considered an aphrodisiac and fertility booster; clinical
studies have shown them to significantly raise testosterone levels in elderly
men. A possible mild antidepressant - prolonged daily use is claimed to promote
cheerfulness, vitality and clarity. Utilized in oriental medicine to tonify and
protect the kidneys and liver, nourish the blood and improve vision. Modern
research shows these delicious berries to enhance the immune system and balance blood
sugar. Lycii berries are a
favorite of the medal winning Chinese Olympic swim team. They have been
demonstrated to increase levels of the potent antioxidant
superoxide dismutase in the body. They are now being thoroughly scrutinized
for their anticancer activity.
Lycii berries are one of the simplest herbs to use, they are very sweet and
tasty, and can be used in food preparation and cooking just like raisins. Try
rehydrating them by soaking in water. Popular blended in smoothies or mixed into
oatmeal and cereal. Traditionally, the berries are boiled in light wine, then
this is used as broth stock in soup. A famed longevity tea is made from equal
parts Lycii and Schizandra berries. An excellent liver cleanse and tonic can be
made in the blender with 1/4 cup soaked berries, 1 tablespoon ground Milk
Thistle seed, 1 teaspoon Chlorella powder and 2 cups apple juice. We love to
chew these delightful berries as snacks daily. One half to one
ounce (1/8 - 1/4 cup) a day is the recommended intake. Eating more during the
cold and flu season is advised.
This once obscure Asian medicinal superfood has been reborn recently as "Goji"
with all the attendant hype that Americans lavish on their pop idols. Even Dole
corporate fruit company has pounced upon the bandwagon, peddling their own brand
of Goji berry. Despite all the hype, Lycii remain a superior nutritive
medicinal.
Unfortunately, most dried Lycii berries are treated with sulfur dioxide as a
preservative. As with all of our herbs, we have taken time to search out high grade
berries
that are organically grown in the ancient Lycii farming region of Ning Xia, China.
Contrary to popular Goji marketing trends, Lycii are not grown or wildcrafted in
Tibet, or in the Himalaya proper, just as Himalayan salt comes actually from the
mountains of Pakistan...!

MACA ROOT Lepidium meyenii,
Lepidium peruvianum "Chacon"
An ancient Andean food/medicine plant cultivated for at least 4,000 years. This turnip like root is
the highest altitude cultivar in the world, grown at elevations over 14,000 feet. A revered adaptogen
and aphrodisiac. Clinical research demonstrates it to be a powerful fertility enhancer for both men and
women. One study showed a nearly 200% libido increase in men! Becoming popular among elderly couples,
some claiming it to be natures answer to Viagra. Provides sustained physical energy,
mental acuity, and
enhances the function of the immune system. Nourishes the endocrine system and is proving to be quite beneficial for problems associated with PMS
and menopause. Also being hailed as a supreme longevity herb and treatment for the biochemical
imbalances that contribute to depression. Maca is quite high in protein, abundant in vitamins, minerals (especially calcium), amino
acids, sterols, flavanols, and alkamides. Like most adaptogens, the effects are most noted with regular
consistent use,
1 - 4 tablespoons a day. With a pleasant malty taste, it mixes well with any
food or drink. Numerous traditional Andean delicacies are made from the root,
such as puddings, stews, and ferments—including a Maca beer, "chicha de
Maca." 20% Maca can be added to flour when making breads or other baked
goods. Many find
it a real treat blended with Cacao. Unlike other Maca powder on the market, ours
is from a mixed variety of organically grown roots, sundried and slow
ground at low temperatures. No coloring agents, glucose or or other sweeteners
have been added. To avoid soil depletion and heavy metal accumulation that Maca
is known for, these roots are cultivated in new fields each year on a 7 year

MESQUITE MEAL, PERUVIAN Prosopis
pallida "Algorroba"
Since ancient times desert
dwellers of the Americas have used the seed pods of the Mesquite tree as a
dietary product, in fact it was probably the single most important food source
for ancient civilizations along South America's arid coastal regions.
The pods with seeds are dried and ground into a flour that has a sweet, nutty, carob-like
flavor with a hint of caramel. It is a good source of calcium, manganese,
potassium, iron and zinc. Its high fiber and protein content aids in stabilizing
blood sugar, making it a good choice for diabetics. It is traditionally made
into cakes, breads, ice cream, sweet beverages or fermented into an alcoholic drink. It
mixes well with many teas and coffee substitutes, as well as chocolate
preparations. One delicious medicinal concoction blends Mesquite, Cacao, Maca
and Lucuma with milk. Our finely ground Mesquite meal is harvested from trees
growing in the
mineral rich deserts of northern Peru. Organically grown Peruvian Mesquite Meal $8/8 oz or

MILK THISTLE SEED Silybum marianum
Seeds of this biennial weed have
been used since at least the 1st century for detoxing and protecting the
liver. The efficacy of this hepatoprotective action has been confirmed by
exhaustive laboratory and clinical research. The responsible compounds are a
complex of flavolignans known collectively as silymarin (=silybin).
Silymarin alters the outer liver membrane cell in such a way that certain
toxins cannot penetrate the cell. Regenerates the liver’s cells by
stimulating RNA polymerase A, thus enhancing ribosome protein synthesis.
Silymarin has even been effective against usually fatal amatoxin/phallotoxin
poisoning from mushrooms. Invaluable for treating all forms of hepatitis and
alcohol induced hepatoxicity. Recent studies have shown Milk Thistle to be
promising inhibiting many forms of cancer, and to enhance the production of
the potent metabolic antioxidants superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione
peroxidase. Even if you don’t have liver damage or disease, Milk Thistle
may offer protection from widespread environmental toxins, pharmaceutical
drugs, even overly rich foods. Eating the whole seed assures you get all the
beneficial constituents, some of which may be absent from extracts. 12–15
grams (2–3 tablespoons) of seed a day should equal 200–400 mg of
silymarin. The seeds are easy to use, powder in a coffee grinder and add to
cereals, smoothies, salads or soups. They can be sprouted and eaten like
sunflower sprouts. We offer the finest grade of seed available.

MOCTEZUMA'S SECRET
When the Spanish barbarian, Cortez burst into the 1520sAztec court, he was shocked and intrigued to discover the
aged Moctezuma reveling in the pastime of a royal harem.
Upon learning that the basis for this royal pleasuring was an
aphrodisiac brew forbidden to all but the court, Cortez kept the Aztec
King alive only long enough to determine its ingredients and
formula. With the rapid culture crash, use and knowledge of the original
Royal Secret was forgotten. The Europeans brought one of the ingredients into world awareness, seed of
the Cacao (Cocoa) Tree, now a household item. In the original erotic brew, cacao was blended with
unique medicinal herbs and spices to give a drink that is worlds apart from our familiar, puny chocolate.
Since partially resurrecting the lost recipe from obscure Vatican manuscripts we have been blending the

MUIRA-PUAMA Ptychopetalum olacoides
Known as "potency wood" throughout Brazil, this is among the most
esteemed herbs from the Amazon. The root is used in folk medicine as a CNS
stimulant, a powerful aphrodisiac and for sexual impotence. The preparation is
generally made by soaking chips in jungle rum sealed in a jar and buried in the
earth for a period of time. Recent clinical studies have validated Muira-Puama’s
effectiveness in improving libido and sexual function for both men and women. It
is most effective when taken as a daily tonic. Although the active compounds are
best extracted by alcohol, it is also brewed as a tea and used in herbal blends
with Catuaba, Ashwaghanda, Eleuthero and Ginkgo. It is said by some to combine well with
popular smoking herbs.

MULUNGU Erythrina
mulungu NEW!!
The bark of this graceful
Amazonian coral tree is a useful hypnotic sedative traditionally used to treat
anxiety, calm the nerves, treat insomnia, epilepsy, rheumatism, asthma, and to
strengthen the liver. Use of Mulungu for anxiety and stress has been validated
by recent studies that show it to produce a anti-anxiety effect similar to
diazepam. It has also been shown to have antibacterial, antiinflammatory, and
liver protective actions. Modern herbal medicine has just begun utilizing
Mulungu to treat depression, liver disorders, promote healthy sleep patterns,
strengthen the heart, and help with drug withdrawal. The chemistry of Mulungu
has been studied extensively; the bark contains novel alkaloids, flavonoids, and
triterpenes. This is yet another impressive botanical from Amazonia. Those who
do not respond well to Kava or other herbal sedatives may find this the perfect
alternative for enjoyable mellow stress relief. 2-3 teaspoons of bark can be decocted 5–10
minutes for tea. Clinical research has documented hypotensive action, so those
with low blood pressure should use it thoughtfully. The tree is fast growing and
increasingly planted as a medicinal ornamental in Brazil. Our bark is
sustainably harvested from semi-cultivated trees.

NEEM LEAF Azadirachta
indica
For centuries the Neem tree has been one of the most versatile sources of
medicine in India. The leaves have been used to treat all manner of maladies
including arthritis, fungal infections, parasites, malaria, indigestion, heart
disease, diabetes, external wounds, sunburn and skin disease. Scientific studies
are affirming many of these uses, showing that Neem leaves are antibacterial,
antifungal, antiviral and may prove beneficial for AIDS, cancer, and reducing
anxiety. Traditionally mixed with grains, stored foods and fibers to repel
insects. Recent studies have shown that they inhibit the common food mold, Aspergillus,
from producing dangerous carcinogenic aflotoxins. Strong leaf tea is also an
effective, safe insecticide and fungicide when sprayed on garden pests. Though
the leaves have been consumed as a tea for ages, some evidence suggests long
term internal use may cause liver damage. Paradoxically a leaf extract is
considered hepatoprotective. Until this is clarified we offer leaves for
external use only.

NEEM SEED OIL Azadirachta
indica
Another important ancient product
from the beneficial Neem tree is an oil made from the seeds. Used in Ayurvedic
medicine to treat infectious disease, skin disorders, rashes, insect bites and
burns. Current research shows the oil to be antiseptic, antifungal,
antibacterial, antiviral. It is widely hailed as a natural insect repellant,
shown to be more effective than DEET for repelling mosquitos. Increasingly used
in cosmetic products, such as lotions and shampoos, for its moisturizing
properties. Neem oil has been widely employed in India as a safe natural
contraceptive for both men and women. As a spray in organic agriculture, it is a
highly effective, eco-friendly insecticide and fungicide. Rich in fatty acids
(primarily oleic, stearic and palmitic) vitamin E, glycerides and liminoids
responsible for the oils medicinal properties. The oil has a nutty, garlic-like
aroma and is best used diluted: as a moisturizer, healing salve and insect
repellant; mix 1 part Neem oil with 5 parts coconut oil. A small amount can also
be added to shampoos and soaps. As a spray for yard and garden, mix thoroughly
1/2 teaspoon oil, 1/2 teaspoon handsoap (as an emulsifier) per cup of warm
water. Much of the Neem oil available is compromised by extraction at high
temperatures or with toxic solvents. Our oil is produced from select Indian
seed, cultivated without chemicals and cold pressed. The oil may partially
solidify if cold-- place the bottle in warm water to liquify.

Aromatic wood from trees
closely related to Copal and the old world Frankincense and Myrrh. The wood can
be boiled and the tea is used to treat stomach aches, as a blood cleanser,
expectorant, for rheumatism, and topically as an antiseptic. Sticks of the wood
are burned as an incense with a unmistakable sweet scent. Traditionally it was
burned for purification and to soothe the spirit. Shamanically it is used as a
tool for "spiritual surgery". One stick can be relit many times. It

Medicinal use of this rainforest tree bark has been spread from the jungle to
the laboratories of international pharmaceutical firms in recent years as the
antitumor action of the phytochemical lapachol and anticandida properties of
xylidione were discovered. It has an apparent lack of toxicity. Highly prized as
an immunostimulant and strengthening medicine for convalescents. Effective for
treating skin disorders and fungal infections. It has pronounced antiviral,
antibacterial, antiparasitical, and antiinflammatory properties. As a mild
astringent it is helpful with digestive disturbances. Increasingly popular as a

PORIA MUSHROOMS Wolfiporia cocos =Poria cocos
"Fu-Ling"
This fungus produces underground mycelial "tubers" of concentrated
tissue, called sclerotia, associated with fir tree roots. In Chinese medicine it
is one of the most widely used and highly respected herbs as well as a popular
food. The superb yin tonic. It is said that it "restores and refreshes the
body and mind, and when used regularly will prolong life." It possesses
significant amounts of lecithin, polysaccharides and tetracyclic triterpenes
with documented immunostimulant, antitumor, and antiviral properties. Used for
forgetfulness and to calm the spirit. Mildly sedative, relaxing to the mind;
these anxiety relieving effects are credited with lengthening life as much as
anything. Poria also was reported to be popular among Imperial concubines. A
typical dose is 6–15 grams, with a neutral taste it mixes well with many foods
like soups, warm cereals or smoothies. For more info see -

PURPLE
CORN Zea mays "Maiz Morado"
Also called Kculli, cultivated in
Peru as a food and medicine since antiquity. Highly nutritious, packed full of
powerful antioxidant polyphenols and flavonoid anthocyanins responsible for one
of the richest purple colors found in nature. Anthocyanins are known to be
anticarcinogenic, antimutagenic, antimicrobial, antiviral; they are found to
reduce cholesterol, promote connective tissue regeneration, stimulate collagen
formation, improve circulation, enhance vision, boost immune function and reduce
inflammation. Studies suggest it aids the prevention of diabetes and obesity.
Japanese research has demonstrated Purple Corn may impede the formation of colon
cancer. Gaining popularity as a antiaging herb and a prophylactic against colds
and flus. We find it has a calming effect on the body and mind, promoting a
tranquil state. An incredible natural fabric and hair dye and a beautiful
addition to beverages and foods. In Peru it is traditionally made into a sweet
beer known as "chicha morado" ( for chicha recipes see the Book
Sacred and Healing Herbal Beers ). The Purple Corn we offer is
organically grown in Peru. We have viable whole kernels and
a potent atomized powder extract. A medicinal drink
can be made by simply soaking the whole kernels in water overnight, straining
and consuming the dark purple infusion. In Peru this infusion is sweetened with
sugar or honey and
served as a delicious refreshing beverage. The extract contains at least 5% anthocyanins—a
single teaspoon equals the anthocyanins found in 1.5 cups of blueberries! 1–2
teaspoons of extract a day, a little goes a long way. The extract powder absorbs
moisture easily, and can become a solid mass if not stored properly. For storage
we recommend a glass jar with an air tight lid.

RAMON
NUTS Brosimum alicastrum "Mayan Breadnut"
Ramon, Capomo, or Ixemche was a
staple crop of the Maya, being widely planted throughout their civilization.
This tree and its close relatives make up to 20% of the natural forests of the
tropical and subtropical Americas, from Mexico to Brazil and throughout the
Caribbean. Listed as one of the most underutilized tropical crops in the world
today by the National Academy of Sciences. Ramon nuts are highly nutritious
being an excellent source of protein (12-13%), fiber, calcium, vitamin C,
several B vitamins, phosphorous and iron. Amino acid contents of the nuts is
more complete than many other staple foods including eggs, milk, wheat, and
corn. In addition to its supreme value as a food, a tea of the nuts is used
medicinally to tonify the liver, relieve allergies, and calm the nerves. The
nuts were traditionally eaten raw, sometimes mixed with honey, often boiled like
potatoes, or ground into a flour and blended with corn to make tortillas.
Roasted and ground Ramon makes a superior caffeine free coffee
substitute,
excellent for those wanting a healthy yet tasty alternative. About 1/2 - 1
tablespoon per cup, prepared just like coffee. Because they have no oil, they
are one of the healthier foods to be eaten roasted. Contemporary uses include
grinding them in a coffee grinder to a fine meal used as a nutritious flour
substitute for breads, cookies, and other baked goods. This meal/flour is an
excellent protein powder for smoothies and blends perfectly with nutmilks.
Rehydrating the dried nuts in water for 8-10 hours softens them nicely to eat
straight or add to any dish. A real joy when blended with honey, raw Cacao,
cinnamon and vanilla. Ramon nut trees are now threatened throughout much of
their former range because of short sighted land conversion to cattle pasture
and monoculture crops. Integrating these valuable nutritious nuts into our diets
can help directly support the preservation of the rainforest ecosystems in which
they grow by creating a sustainable economic incentive to stop the felling of
the trees. The nuts we offer are harvested in an ecologically sustainable manner
in Central America.

REISHI MUSHROOMS Ganoderma lucidum
"Ling Zhi"
Since ancient times
Oriental medicine has classified healing plants, but there have only been a
handful considered as the Superior Medicines. Reishi mushroom (or Ling Zhi=
"spirit plant") is top among these rare and prized medicinals which
are said to give long life, assist all healing processes, are suited for all
people and combine with other medicines. Reishi is reputed to "keep the
body light and young and to lengthen life." It contains a large number of
beneficial polysaccharides and triterpenes as well as alkaloids, steroids,
lipids, oleic acid, adenosine, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Current
clinical studies reveal this impressive mushroom to be a highly effective
therapy for nearly all major disease states and to confer "nonspecific
immunity" through longterm regular use. Just a few of the disorders Reishi
has proven itself beneficial for include allergies, cancer, liver disease,
Alzheimer's, heart disease, AIDS, radiation exposure, external wound healing and
chronic bronchitis. Consider the fact that the compounds this organism produces
enable it to assimilate the tough lignans of dead hardwood. Reishi is also
suitable for calming anxiety and promoting sound sleep. One-quarter ounce is
generally cut up or powdered and simmered into a tea, consumed over a day or
two. The dried mushrooms are seen in shrines as objects of veneration and the
strange lacquered-like beauty of the woody bodies is certainly suited for
display. We have several arrangements in our home as sculptural altarpieces. We
offer dried whole mushrooms and powdered mushrooms as well as potent powdered

RHODIOLA ROOT Rhodiola
rosea
The magical root of this semi-succulent
Russian plant, also known as "Rose Root" or "Golden Root", is emerging
as one the most promising "new" adaptogens and herbal "smart drugs".
Recorded knowledge of this herb dates back over 2,000 years, but it’s just now
getting notice here in the west due to extensive pharmacological and clinical
studies. An official medicine of the former Soviet Union Pharmacopoeia, the
phytochemically rich root contains a host of beneficial compounds including
flavonoids, terpenes, phenylpropanoids (rosavin), phenylethanols and phenolic acids
responsible for the antioxidant, adaptogenic and cerebroactive effects. Clinical
research has shown Rhodiola to enhance cognition; improving memory and learning,
greatly reduce stress and fatigue, stimulate the immune system, increase
metabolism, aid thyroid function, protect the cardiovascular system, boost
fertility and sexual function, and alleviate depression. It has also proven
beneficial for cancer and ameliorates some of the side effects of chemotherapy.
Folk medicine uses this incredible root for practically every known ailment; to
increase energy, endurance, longevity, stimulate sexual arousal, enhance mood
and psychic abilities. In Siberian mountain villages, the roots are still given
to couples prior to marriage to assure fertility and many healthy children.
Viking warriors once chewed the root to build their physical strength.
Taken late in the day, the root's powerful psychostimulant effects are known
to cause insomnia, but once asleep induce vivid dreams. Unlike most
adaptogens that need to be taken for several weeks to be effective, Rhodiola
begins to act with the first dose. A healthy and stimulating
caffeine free alternative to coffee and tea. Excellent for periods of intense study.
Rhodiola’s ability to keep one awake and aroused is leading to its rising
popularity in the Rave dance scene as a intelligent alternative to illegal and
unhealthy stimulants.
Brews a red pink tea that smells and tastes reminiscent of rose petals. 1-3
teaspoons per cup, more for a real cerebral workout. Steep for 10-15 minutes, if
steeped longer the tea becomes strongly astringent. We have found mixing it with Rooibos or Honeybush tea
is quite delicious and helps to balance the astringency. We offer roots that
have been grown without chemicals, and will automatically substitute organically
grown roots when available at no extra charge.

RHODIOLA ROOT,
TIBETAN Rhodiola kirilowii or other ssp.
Similar to Rhodiola rosea,
this is one of the sacred herbs of Tibet, used as a vitalizing tonic and supreme
medicine since the beginning of the Tibetan civilization. Rhodiola kirilowii,
crenulata, and sacra are believed to enhance
wisdom and prolong life, it is said Tibetan monks made use of the root to fuel
their "spiritual power." It has been proposed that this high altitude herb
played a significant role in the evolution of Tibetan culture. Traditionally
utilized in many of the same ways as Rhodiola rosea, it is also a
specific for lung disease and mixed with Lycii (Goji) Berries and Hippophae (Sea
Buckthorn) fruit as a supreme preventative and treatment for altitude sickness.
Modern studies are few compared to R. rosea, the phytochemistry is a
little different, yet its value as a powerful adaptogen and energizing psychic
stimulant cannot be questioned.

ROOIBOS TEA Aspalathus linearis
Rooibos,
or redbush, is a traditional beverage of the Khoi people of the Cederberg region
of South Africa. Made from leaves and twigs of a leguminous shrub -- chopped,
moistened, bruised and heaped to "ferment" for several hours. The
"fermentation" is actually a process during which phenolic compounds
in the plant are oxidized, giving the tea its characteristic reddish brown color
and sweet aroma. Once this process is complete the tea is carefully spread out
and dried in the sun.
A favorite among tea connoisseurs the world over, Rooibos is
Japan’s #1 imported tea, and also our personal favorite.
It brews a beautiful dark red tea that is slightly
sweet with a rich, satisfying body and all the depth black tea drinkers expect.
Highly nutritious, low in tannins and free of caffeine and oxalic acid. A
delicious and healthy choice for those wanting an alternative to common tea or
coffee.
Interestingly, its effects are pleasantly stimulating when consumed during the
day and relaxing at night, promoting sound sleep. It has true adaptogenic
properties and is rich in potassium, copper, zinc, iron, magnesium, sodium,
fluoride and manganese. High in immune building antioxidants, as
potent as Green Tea. Contains quercetin and the unique flavonoid C-glycosides
aspalathin and nothofagin, a superoxide dismutase mimic, and oligosaccharides
known to have strong anti-HIV activity. Documented research has shown Rooibos to
have antiinflammatory, anticarcinogenic/mutagenic, and even antiaging
properties. It’s a traditional remedy for infant colic and offers relief for
mild depression, nervous tension, stomach cramps, and constipation, while
enhancing metabolic function. Drinking the tea everyday is an excellent
prophylactic for colds and flus; allergies and asthma are even found to be
significantly reduced. Applied topically as a wash or added to the bath it helps
clear acne and a wide variety of skin ailments. Japanese studies have
demonstrated its effectiveness suppressing herpes simplex. Highly versatile, we
also find it be a great natural dye and wonderful coloring and flavoring agent
for cooking and baking.
Research has shown that for maximum health benefits the tea should be steeped at
least 10 minutes. 2 -3 teaspoons per cup is recommended. The same tea can be
infused several times. Above all, it simply tastes superb -- hot or iced. Enjoyed
by children and adults alike.

SACHA
JERGON Dracontium peruvianum
This tuber
has long been used by indigenous tribes to treat snakebites in the Amazon
region. In Peruvian herbalism it is used as a natural remedy for
gastrointestinal problems, respiratory ailments, HIV/AIDS, cancer,
hepatitis, viral infections and to enhance the immune system. It is
theorized that the effects of Sacha Jergon on snakebites and its use in
treating a variety of diseases could possibly be due to the presence of
protease inhibitors in the plant. Protease inhibitors prevent certain
enzymes from functioning properly, and these enzymes often play key roles
in diseases such as HIV as well as snake venom. No clinical studies
currently exist on Sacha Jergon. Positive research by a Peruvian doctor on
the use of Sacha Jergon to treat AIDS in combination with Una de Gato has
led to widespread use of the tuber in South America and Europe. For immune
disorders the recommended dosage is 2-3 grams (1 teaspoon) 2-3 times a
day. Sustainably harvested in northeastern Peru.

SACRED
LOTUS FLOWERS Nelumbo nucifera
The magnificent multi-petalled Lotus flower is universally known as a symbol of
spiritual development, sublime perfection and enlightenment. In India it is said
that this wondrous water weed first bloomed with the creation of the universe.
In fact, the Lotus boasts one of the oldest known germinable seed, nearly 1,300
years old! It has been speculated recently to be one of the
sources of Soma, the wellspring of eastern religion. A well kept secret of Hindu
and Buddhist traditions, the flowers are a safe and unique medicinal inebriant.
The effects, known to increase with continued use, vary from a pleasant sedation
to rhapsodic bliss. A friend described his experience as "…a feeling of
joy that permeated my whole body, emanating from every cell…I was perfectly
content to sit in the sun and do nothing…" These properties were known to
the ancient Greeks and immortalized in Homer’s Odyssey. Useful for
anxiety states, an aid to meditation and the perfect remedy for workaholics.
Used as a heart tonic and against syphilis in Asia. 1/4 to 1/2 ounce or more can
be made into tea, steeped for an hour. Macerating in fruit juice or red wine
(sulfite-free) and soaking for 24 hours also works well. The flowers are also
sometimes smoked.

SANGRE DE DRAGO Croton lechleri
"The Liquid Bandage"
Medicinal jungle tree sap from South America, famed as a healing cure all and
emerging as one of the most versatile and important rain forest medicines.
Recent research has revealed Sangre de Drago to be high in antioxidant
proanthocyanidens (pycnogenol) and a host of alkaloids with antitumor
properties. It is traditionally used internally for ulcers, cirrhosis, cancer,
hemorrhage, to treat diarrhea, as a blood cleanser and as a general tonic. 5–10
drops diluted in water or juice is drunk once a day. Its usefulness as an
external remedy is unsurpassed. We wouldn’t be without it in the jungle, in
the garden or the kitchen as a first aid remedy for wounds. A drop is applied
directly or rubbed into a froth that will seal the skin, drying into a
antiseptic "liquid bandage" for speedy wound healing. Perfect for
areas like fingers where cuts seem to keep opening and no bandage will seem to
stay put. Antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anticancer, a
topical painkiller and antiinflammatory. Excellent for insect bites, rashes,
acne, all forms of skin disease and hemorrhoids. The phenanthrene alkaloid
taspine and the lignan dimethylcedrusine is thought partially responsible for
Sangre de Drago’s amazing ability to accelerate wound healing 10–20 times! A
few drops in water is also used as a mouthwash which is claimed to be very
beneficial to the teeth and gums (the natives who told us this had impeccable
teeth). We find it an effective safeguard against digestive disturbances and
other maladies when traveling. Modern studies have confirmed nearly all
traditional applications and shown Sangre de Drago to be beneficial for colds
and flus, hepatitis A and B and HIV. It also makes a beautiful natural red-brown
dye. Our pure undiluted latex is carefully wildcrafted in
Peru.

SCELETIUM Sceletium tortuosum "Kougoed"
A small succulent shrub in
the ice plant family, the San and Khoi people of South Africa have a long
history of using the plant as a hunger and thirst suppressant, analgesic, and
most importantly as a highly esteemed mood alterant. A fermented and dried
preparation of Sceletium tortuosum is known as "Kougoed" or
"Kanna"
and has been used since prehistoric times as a safe and beneficial inebriant.
This prepared dried material is chewed, made into a tea or occasionally smoked
or snuffed. The effects are quite pleasant, being both stimulating and
relaxing, even euphoric, decreasing anxiety, stress and tension. No severe
adverse effects have been reported, even from chronic use of the plant. In fact,
indigenous healers are known to use "Kougoed" to successfully treat
alcoholism and small doses are mixed with breast milk and given to infants to
treat colic. Chemically complex, one of the major alkaloids, mesembrine, is a
powerful serotonin uptake inhibitor. Sceletium is being utilized by
psychiatrists and doctors for its positive results treating mild to medium
depression and anxiety. There is research into it aiding recovery from drug
addiction and possible anticancer properties. Many are finding Sceletium
to be a highly effective, safe, and fun natural supplement to elevate and
regulate mood. 1/20 to 1/10 gram (50 - 100 mg) is taken a day. Those taking
pharmaceutical antidepressants and other psychiatric medications should use
common sense and proceed with caution, consult your physician, there may be some
contraindication. Sceletium
tortuosum is endangered in the wild and because of its increasing popularity
unethically "wildcrafted" material (usually shredded not powdered) is
beginning to appear on the market, further threatening the survival of this
curious plant. Our "Kougoed" is naturally cultivated in South Africa without
the use of any pesticides or fertilizers. The whole plant is carefully
fermented and dried to bring you the finest material available.

SCHIZANDRA BERRIES Schizandra
chinensis "Wu Wei Tsu"
Once only available to wealthy Chinese
aristocrats and royalty, the whole berries of the Schizandra vine are a powerful
adaptogen, increasing the body’s resistance to all kinds of stress and
disease. The Chinese have long considered it a superior sexual tonic, as it is
known to relieve sexual fatigue, sensitize women’s sexual experience and
increase the staying power of men. Contains abundant antihepatotoxic lignans
known as asgomisins to the Japanese and wuweizisus to the Chinese. Clinical
studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Schizandra in protecting and even
regenerating liver cells. Recommended for alcoholism. Aids digestion by
regulating gastric acid release and is showing promise as a safe antidepressant.
Continued use is said to purify the blood, build stamina, brighten the mind and
produce radiant skin. These are currant-like berries which amazingly have 5
distinct flavors—sweet, salty, sour, pungent and bitter. Chewing the berries
is enjoyable and unique, each flavor is experienced individually and then all at
once in a deluge of taste sensation. Traditional knowledge recommends reducing
their high tannin content prior to use by soaking the berries for several hours
then discarding the water. An excellent traditional Chinese preparation is made
by boiling them in wine. A delicious sun tea can be made by steeping them in the
sun in a jar, with leafy herbs and sweetener.

source for vitamin A, C, & E, and rich in B1 & 2, K, carotenoids,
phospholipids, EFA’s, sterols, amino acids, flavonoids, microelements, etc. It
is one of the few vegetal sources of serotonin (5–HT). A powerful antioxidant
and immunomodulator, extensive studies in China and Russia show Seabuckthorn to
support liver and cardiovascular health, balance thyroid, stimulate gastric
juices and reduce inflammation. The active constituents in Seabuckthorn are
considered the flavonoids quercitin, isorhamnetin, myricetin and kaempferol. Lab
studies suggest they have adaptogenic properties, promote production of red
blood cells, reduce allergies, protect against carcinogenesis, decrease
cholesterol and improve heart function. A traditional Yin tonic and Yang
strengthener, used to move blood, improve digestion and coughs. An energizing
Tibetan formula for high altitude adjustment blends Seabuckthorn with Lycii
berries and Rhodiola. The dried berries have a mild tart flavor, steeped as tea
or eaten straight. They can be soaked overnight then dropped in the blender with
water, strained to remove the seeds; this liquid can then be sweetened like
lemonade or added to juice or smoothies.

SILENE ROOTS Silene
undulata (=Silene capensis)
"Xhosa Dream Root" NEW!
In the eastern cape province
of South Africa there grows a small plant known locally as a wild tobacco. To
the Xhosa it is a highly regarded amayeza (medicinal herb) for
cleansing. Most interesting is the use of the root among diviners as a kind of ubulawu;
an herb for manifesting vibrant and even prescient dreams that allow ancestral
communion. To this extent it is known as undlela ziimhlophe; "white
paths". This herb holds great potential for those who have trouble
remembering their dreams or want greater clarity in dreams. Only the dreamstate
is effected, no significant alteration of waking consciousness is reported.
Traditionally the root is pounded and stirred into water until a frothy foam
forms, it is this foam that is then consumed. Contemporary use finds mixing 1–2
teaspoons of root with water in the blender is effective to produce the foam.
Chewing a small piece of root (as little as 50 mg =1" matchstick size)
prior to sleep can also be effective, especially when done consistently for
several nights. Xhosa wisdom dictates minimizing protein intake to experience
the brightest dreams, abstinence from stimulants and other psychoactives is also
advised. Please note that large doses of the root cause nausea and are used
traditionally as a safe emetic. Pharmacological knowledge of the plant is
lacking, the oneirogenic effects may be due to saponins. We have a limited
supply.

SPIRULINA Spirulina platensis
A microscopic spiral shaped blue-green ALGAE
native to shallow brackish lakes. Also known as a cyanobacteria, 3.6 billion
year old fossils attest to its longevity. Esteemed as a superfood for centuries
by people inhabiting the regions surrounding Mexico’s Lake Texcoco and Africa’s
Lake Chad, Lake Nakura and Lake Rudolf. It is one of the most heavily
researched, nutritious, well rounded foods on earth. Spirulina complements and
should not be confused with the other popular edible blue-green algae, Aphanizomenon
flos-aquae -- a nutritive cerebral stimulant wildcrafted from Oregon’s
Klamath Lake.
Spirulina contains 65-75% easily digested complete protein, the highest amount
of any food. This is 3 to 4 times more than the poorly assimilable protein found
in fish, chicken and beef. It has 18 amino acids including the essential 8, over
2000 enzymes, phytonutrients, and a vast array of minerals including zinc, iron,
calcium, selenium, manganese, chromium, and iodine. It’s the richest known
plant in vitamin B12, one of the top sources for the full spectrum of
carotenoids, and is abundant in vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, D, E, K,
chlorophyll, and RNA/DNA. It is the best natural source for the potent
antioxidant evercetin. It contains sulfolipids that show promise for their
anti-HIV action. A good source of essential fatty acids like DHA, and next to
human breast milk, it’s thought to be the best whole food source for the rare
fatty acid GLA. Spirulina contains the unique blue pigment phycocyanin -- shown to
inhibit cancer, protect the kidneys and increase mental capacity. Spirulina’s
cell wall is composed entirely of digestible mucopolysaccharides that are
credited with strong antiinflammatory action and strengthening connective
tissues while making them more elastic and resilient -- one of the reasons
Spirulina is loved by yogis and olympic athletes.
Regular consumption of Spirulina is fortifying to immune-function and aids
digestion. Many people report that after eating Spirulina for several months
they sunburn less easily. Scores of scientific studies point to its usefulness
in cases of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, hepatitis, candida, and
a host of other disorders. A Russian patent has been awarded Spirulina as
medicine for its effectiveness in treating radiation sickness in the children of
Chernobyl. It is being used in many programs to combat malnutrition in third
world countries. Spirulina is becoming increasingly popular in pet foods as its
health benefits are seen as extending far outside the human realm.
Start with ingesting 1 tablespoon a day and work up to 4 or more over time.
Larger amounts can be taken for cleansing, athletic performance and defending
against specific illness. The favorite method of ingestion is mixing with honey,
juice or smoothies. It also combines well with many other foods. Spirulina gives
a great energy boost and is sustaining and detoxifying during fasts. We’ve
found that consuming Spirulina daily for several months produces a subtle yet
distinct shift in consciousness best described as a euphoric heightening of
sensory awareness.
Acre for acre, Spirulina cultivation can produce 20 times more protein than
soybeans and 2000 times more than beef cattle with practically no environmental
impact. Our Spirulina is cultivated in shallow open ponds
adjacent to the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii. The ponds are filled with fresh water
and supplemented with ancient, mineral rich ocean water pulled from a depth of
2000 feet. To harvest, the spirulina is rinsed numerous times with fresh water,
filtered and dried in a low oxygen environment by a unique patented process
called Ocean Chilled Drying. This method completely eliminates any loss of
nutrients, producing the finest grade dark green powder with a mild sea
vegetable taste. It has the highest carotene, phytonutrient and enzyme content
of any Spirulina. It is regularly tested by an independent laboratory to assure
that it is of top quality and totally free from microbes, pesticides and other
contaminants. It is certified Kosher.
To best preserve nutrients we suggest storing Spirulina in an air tight glass
jar in the refrigerator. One pound fits into a one quart mason jar.
Please note that the grower of our Spirulina has chosen to drop their
organic certification due to changes in regulations, they have not changed anything
about their growing practices, all that has changed are the organic
certification regulations. For the complete story see the bottom of the ALGAE
page.

SUMA ROOT Pfaffia paniculata
The root of a shrubby vine indigenous to the Amazon basin where it is known as
para todo, which means "for all things", owing its use as a general
cure all. An adaptogen that has recently gained the title "Brazilian
Ginseng." Rainforest tribes have used Suma as a sexual tonic, energy
booster and wound healer. Studies have confirmed its history as an aphrodisiac.
Modern herbalism is beginning to make use of Suma’s abilities to oxygenate the
blood, stimulate circulation, balance blood sugar, increase estrogen production,
boost the immune system and sharpen cognitive function. Effective treating
chronic fatigue and scientific studies show it has promise in aiding recovery
from anemia and some cancers. Russian Olympic Athletes have taken Suma root to
build muscle and increase endurance without the negative effects associated with
steroids. This action is attributed to concentrated levels of an anabolic like
substances. Suma root is very nutritious with 19 amino acids, vitamins, and
trace minerals including germanium and zinc. The taste is similar to that of

TREMELLA MUSHROOM Tremella fuciformis
"Bai Mu Erh"
A large flowery fungus that is one of the most significant of the medicinal
mushrooms, with a long tradition of healing and culinary use in China. Tremella
polysaccharides are proven to enhance cellular and immune function. Used in
Chinese hospitals as a co-treatment with chemo and radiation therapy and for
hepatitis. In Chinese herbalism it has specific action on the lungs, used for
coughs, asthma and bronchitis in a one month daily use program. Recommended for
anyone smoking tobacco or other herbal products. Clinical research has also
shown the fungus to be antidiabetic, antitumor, hepatoprotective, cholesterol
reducing, to slow aging and prevent osteoporosis by enhancing calcium
absorption. Used for the purpose of "beautifying the skin" since
antiquity, it is said that the most beautiful woman in Chinese history, the
Imperial Concubine Yang Gufei (719–756), was highly enthusiastic about the
mushroom for her body care. Very nutritious, containing high amounts of
essential fatty acids, vitamin D and dietary fibers. Considered a delicacy,
traditionally used in soup, stir fry or boiled in wine. Soaking the dried fungus
in water for 5 minutes renders it edible and we enjoy its gelatinous quality,
chopped and added to salad. Tremella is also popular made into a candy or syrup
by boiling with honey or sugar. This versatile fungus is one of our favorites!

UNA DE GATO
BARK Uncaria tomentosa "Cats Claw Vine"
Uña de Gato (Cat's
Claw) is a branching
shrub with thorned, liana-like stalks. The older, lower branches yield a bark
rich in medicinal compounds, including rhynchopylline, the ibogoid alkaloid
corynantheine and the Kratom alkaloids mitraphylline and speciophylline as well
as potent antioxidant proanthocyanidins. Exported in ton quantities from
Amazonia to Europe’s herbal medicine industry. A common admixture to ayahuasca
brews, native Amazonian healers have an intimate relationship with this
"teacher plant" and know it to unify and balance the body and spirit.
Traditional use for a wide variety of illnesses includes rheumatism, cirrhosis,
dysentery, fungal infections and reproductive tract tumors. An immunofortifying
tonic; clinics exist today in the Amazon where AIDS patients are being treated
with extracts of the plant. This herb has attracted enormous favorable attention
among herbalists and clinical phytotherapists worldwide. Clinical studies are
showing Uña de Gato to be a strong antiinflammatory, lower blood pressure,
increase circulation and have strong antitumor effects. Western herbalists are
reporting success utilizing the bark for many forms of cancer, candida,
fibromyalgia, Lyme's disease, parasites, all forms of gastrointestinal disease,
viral infections, allergies and much more. A strong decoction can be made with 1–2
tablespoons of the bitter bark and drunk throughout the day, or the bark powder
can be taken in capsules. We offer Uña de Gato leaf as well, which has much of

WATER LILY
FLOWERS, BLUE Nymphaea caerulea
In 1922 when the Pharoah Tutankhamen’s tomb was opened his body was found
adorned in Blue Water Lily flowers. Held sacred by the ancient Egyptians, the
Blue Water Lily was central to their creation myths and beliefs surrounding
death and rebirth. Widely and reverently depicted on ancient stelae, in texts,
and in the curious form of ritual chalices made in the likeness of the blossom.
This mysterious, divinely perfumed flower had a profound impact on Egyptian
culture. Mention of the blue lily in the Book of the Dead makes clear its
magical importance in shamanic transformation and suggests visionary attributes.
The widespread depictions were long thought to be merely symbolic, but current
investigations into the properties of the flowers have demonstrated their
hypnotic and possibly visionary value. They were surely used in ancient Egypt
for medicine and in shamanic trance/healing ceremonies, although exactly how is
still somewhat uncertain. Egyptian priests had a vast knowledge of herbal plant
lore, and it is likely that they created a concoction of the lily to concentrate
its psychoactivity. Artwork often depicts the flowers along with mandrake
fruits, poppies and palm wine, giving us clues to their formulations.
Contemporary use shows the effects of the flowers to be ecstatic and sedative,
very similar to the closely related White Water Lily and Sacred Lotus. This
ability of the lily to induce trance also makes it an effective sleep aid, mild
pain killer and muscle relaxant. It is said to be excellent for the skin. 1/8
-1/4 ounce can be made into tea, or soaked in sulfite free wine or juice for 24
hours and strained. The flowers we
offer are carefully dried to retain there brilliant color and magnificent scent.

WATER LILY
FLOWERS, MAYAN Nymphaea ampla
Commonly depicted in Meso-American
art, especially the Classic Mayan period, often in association with jaguars and
visionary scenes. This beautiful white flowered water lily likely held a similar
importance to Central American cultures as did the Blue Water Lily to the
Egyptians. A calming sedative and mild trance inducer, it is believed it was an
additive to the inebriating balche drink of the Maya (see Audio
Recordings 033 &
115). As a demulcent it is used
for ulcers and skin disease. Utilize like other water lilies. Carefully
harvested and shade dried.
Mayan Water Lily Flowers $16/1oz or $50/4 oz
WATER LILY
FLOWERS, WHITE Nymphaea alba
Said by the ancient Greeks to have arisen from the body of a mythic nymph. The
flowers of the White Water Lily produce a relaxed dreamy state similar to that
of the blue water lily and sacred lotus. The effects are said to be cumulative
when taken for more than one day. Medieval monks and nuns knew the plant as the
"flower of chastity" because of its ability to banish their sexual desires
with a state of spiritual bliss. Traditionally the flowers were made into a
syrup or conserve used to treat insomnia and anxiety. During WW I when the
German colonies in Africa couldn’t obtain botanical anesthetics from India,
they found that an extract of Nymphaea alba worked quite well. Like other
water lilies/lotus, White Water Lily flowers can be made into tea, steeped in
juice/wine. The mucilage rich flowers also have demulcent properties,
being excellent for sore throats. Limited stock.

higher levels of polyphenol antioxidants than other Green Teas and low caffeine.
A favorite of Emperor Hui Tsung who was so enraptured by his love of tea, and
preoccupied pursuing the perfect brew, that in the 1100s his empire was lost to
invading Mongols. White Tea has a most delicate flavor, smooth and subtle with a
sensuous full body, hint of sweet aftertaste and no grassy overtones. We offer
the finest White Peony Tea (Bai Mu Dan) fair trade certified and organically

YACON ROOT Smallanthus
sonchifolius
A sunflower relative
with edible tubers grown throughout the Andean region. Yacon roots contain
important quantities of potassium and antioxidants. Unlike many other roots and
tubers, yacon does not store its carbohydrates as starch, but as
fructooligosaccharide (FOS). Dried Yacon root powder contains 50-70% FOS and low
proportion of simple sugars (e.g., glucose, fructose and sucrose). The human
body has no enzyme to metabolize FOS, so it passes through the digestive tract
providing few calories, making it great for dieters and diabetics. Yacon also
acts as a prebiotic, the undigested portion serves as food for
"friendly" bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus
species, in the colon. Clinical studies have shown an increase in the number of
these friendly bacteria in the colon while simultaneously reducing the
population of harmful bacteria. It is a powerful combination for colon health
when taken regularly along with probiotics. Other
benefits of regular FOS consumption include increased production of beneficial
short-chain fatty acids, increased absorption of calcium and magnesium,
increased bone density, improved absorption of vitamins, and improved
elimination of toxins. Yacon has a mild sweet flavor and mixes well with juice
and other foods. 2-4 teaspoons/day recommended.

YERBA MATE Ilex paraguayensis
This
traditional Argentine beverage comes from the leaves of a bushy South American
tree related to the common holly. The thick, shiny leaves are rich in caffeine
(to over 2%). The leaves are highly nutritious, said to contain nearly all the
vitamins necessary to sustain life. They have several volatile oils present
which give the tea part of its distinctive aroma and taste. The best quality
product comes from a process of lightly fire roasting and curing the fresh
branches to develop the characteristic smoky flavor prized by Yerba Maté
lovers. In Paraguay and Argentina it is the national beverage,
consumed in vast quantities daily. Much of the supply comes from wild native
trees which are perfectly suited to sustainable harvesting. It has been so
highly valued that it was once considered "green gold." The foraging
industry depends on the preservation of intact forest habitat, so the protection
of South American forests is in part made necessary by a strong market demand
for such wild collected products. Drinking Yerba Maté helps protect the planet’s
endangered habitats and supports simple forest people with a right livelihood.
Yerba Maté is prepared in South America in a ritualized ceremony using a
special gourd cup and straw
set, in fact the word Maté specifically refers to
the gourd. These are often highly decorated utensils, ornamented with pure
silver. The straw or Bombilla is an ingenious hollow spoon-shaped
utensil, flared at the base and fitted with a screen which allows the brew to be
strained as it is sipped. A large spoonful of crushed, dried leaves is placed in
the gourd cup and boiling water is poured over them and left to steep for
several minutes. Although coca leaves are also popular in some Maté drinking
areas of South America, it is definitely not advisable to drink Yerba Maté
while chewing coca, for the numbing effect of the coca leaves can lead to
scalding of the lips by a sip of too-hot tea through a hot Bombilla.
Those of us without the traditional Maté apparatus can prepare an equally fine
beverage by pouring water over the herb in a teapot and straining into cups
after steeping.
The effects of Yerba Maté are relatively long lasting, inducing a type of
mental clarity and expansion of thought processing capabilities. A feeling of
enhanced memory and accelerated intellect is often experienced, however the racy
edge of physical and mental stimulation is seldom noted. This state is
especially suited to periods of intense study, calculation and cerebral activity
requiring endurance to maintain continuous attention and precision focus.
Our organically harvested Yerba Maté is hand picked, naturally fired
and slow-cured. It comes from sustainably harvested trees grown in the
rainforest understory. Yerba Maté is lower in tannins than Green Tea and
contains more healthful tonic properties and antioxidants. These include
immune boosting saponins and polyphenols, 15 amino acids, 24 vitamins and minerals. Regular
Maté consumption has been found to reduce cholesterol,
improve digestion, aid in weight loss and offer relief from allergies. Clinical
studies suggest that individuals who are sensitive to caffeine can drink Yerba
Maté without adverse reactions. On average, one pound of herb will last one
month or so.
